TEL AVIV, Nov 13 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrived in Israel on Sunday declaring a Palestinian state would enhance the Jewish state's security.
Speaking to reporters en route from Saudi Arabia, Rice said she would use a speech later on Sunday to demonstrate that change was taking place rapidly in other parts of the Middle East and Israel and the Palestinians should follow suit.
"I will talk about the changed context in the Middle East," she said, referring to Libya's decision to abandon weapons of mass destruction, Syria's withdrawal from Lebanon, the ousting of Saddam Hussein in Iraq, and tentative reforms in Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
She spoke of the changed environment in Israel and the Palestinian territories, with the death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat a year ago and Israel's successful withdrawal from the occupied Gaza Strip in September.
"A Palestinian state would indeed enhance Israeli security," Rice said.
Asked what she would request of the two sides during her trip, Rice said the Palestinians needed to tackle militants ahead of January's parliamentary election and said a democratic state could not be built when organisations remained armed.
"The need to deal with the infrastructure of terrorism is a road map obligation," she said referring to a U.S.-backed peace plan setting out steps for a Palestinian state alongside a secure Israel.

And exactly how would another Palestinian arab state carved out areas administered by Israel (I guess she left those words out) benefit Israel's security?

I have thought for a long time that the Israelis should announce, unilaterally, their intention to give the Palestinians statehood. A 90 day transisiton period after which Palestine would be held accountable for all acts of terrorism committed by their citizens.

As the Palestinians have proven over and over and over again, it would merely be used as a staging area for attacks on Israel. Make the West Bank and the Gaza Strip part of Jordan, although I am certain they don't want this hot potato. Build the fence, build it higher and thicker, and let the Palis concentrate their efforts on building an economy instead of obsessing on building bombs and destroying Israel.

There will never be an independent arab West Bank. Separate from Israel, separate from Jordan, it is not viable; it has no markets, no source of employment, and it is doomed to be what it is, a lawless enclave ruled by lawless men.
The longer we waste time trying to create something that will never be, the longer we delay creating something that can be, and the more innocent Israelis die, and the more young deluded arabs die stupidly and needlessly.

Yes, they need a big one, with lots of weapons. They've got two neighboring states, Jordan and Egypt to destabilize, along with fighting Israel. Of course the US will help.
