FRANCE yesterday ordered a ban on public meetings likely to provoke disturbances as thousands of police were deployed on the streets of Paris to stop youths turning the tourist centre into a battlefield. The initiative came as speculation mounted over a severely discredited Jacques Chiracs ability to endure the last 17 months of his presidential term.
Ringleaders of the riots that have shaken France for the past two weeks were suspected of planning to set ablaze the affluent Champs Elysées. Through text and internet messages they were encouraging followers armed with Molotov cocktails to converge on the tree-lined tourist haunt just a stones throw from Chiracs palace.
The violence, which started just over two weeks ago in poor suburbs, has fallen in intensity since the government announced emergency measures on Tuesday. Lyons witnessed the first riot in a major city centre yesterday, but police quickly took control by firing tear gas.
Across the country, 76 cars were torched before midnight, arsonists burnt down an electronics store on the fringes of Toulouse and a school in the southern town of Carpentras. A riot policeman was injured by a metal ball thrown from an apartment block in a Paris suburb.
On Friday night 502 vehicles were set ablaze, the highest total for three days, and 206 people were arrested. In Carpentras, two fire bombs were hurled at a mosque

Crow-eating socialist Muslim appeaser BUMP for Chirac & his MSM cronies!!! Enjoy your meal!
Smoke damage to the facade, because zeal was flagging. Just a minimal investment to reenergize the troops.
Do not forget the unknown Scotsman that made the first single malt whiskey.
I will opt for choice "C" also with one minor adjustment.
C: The rioters torched their own mosque with superficial damage so they can fan the flames some more.
There, that's probably more complete.
Nam Vet
Now there's the real point. However, I wonder if we aren't so near the end that the vacuum of leadership can only be filled by the Holy Spirit.
Incrementalism to be sure...how sucessful it will be is any mans guess... I take nothing off the table either way because they certainly do have a punchers chance considering how mired the west is in their high minded PC mindset.
As a Scot, you can bet I won't be forgetten' that point.
A frenchman taking a bath? Now that's funny.
But will the kool aid socialist liberals see this in any way as an indictment of their approach to government? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
That would be against their operating procedure, which dictates that when confronted with failure, blame your enemies and then do more of the same that created the mess in the first place.
Come to think of it, Islamic nations follow the same procedures.
The MSM can say "youths," but that ignores gender. None of the rioters are female...which pokes a big hole into the "poor unemployed are rioting" theory (what, no females are unemployed in a France that has 11% national unemployment?!).
This is not a trivial point. In France's 1968 riots, many, perhaps even most, rioters were female.
Not so today.
...And the failure of the news media to discuss this difference in rioting gender between 1968 and today causes all of their so-called "analysis" to be suspect.
So do it again, would ya'?
"Only it wouldn't be the same here. Americans would start shooting the mf's. Which would horrify the MSM even more."
You know, Michael Savage said the Soccer Thugs may well save England. That the rednecks would do the same thing here in the US.
If riots broke out on our shores, these people would be, in part, our saviors. If the left didn't crucify them before they took care of business.
And they would take care of business. I know boys out here in Wyoming and Montana who would wipe the floor with a bunch of punks trying to pull what they're doing in France now. Just up to the top of a building and mount the scope... no more rioters.
I think that the point about the Soccer Thugs being able to save England would have served well a few years ago, but now, I'm not too sure
Yes, indeed. Kerry should rush to Paris and salute his pal..."Reporting for duty, Monsieur Chirac!" Two peas in a pod.
If Chirac were serious about stopping the burning he would have ordered the national police to shoot those who throw firebombs.
Since he didn't order this, he is responsible for the loss of property and the ability of many Frenchmen to earn their living.
But then, Chirac is a socialist, so tout s'explique ! (it is all explained!)
Yawn, who cares?
So, when Chirac flees Francistan will we give him sanctuary?
