Police Remain on Alert for Weekend Violence Even as Arson Subsides [Over 300 cars]

PARIS (AP) - Authorities stepped up security Friday and placed restrictions on some public gatherings after tip-offs from Internet and text messages suggested "violent actions" over the weekend in the French capital.

But as France marked Armistice Day commemorating the end of World War I, calls for peace in the restive poor neighborhoods of France rang out, from demonstrators in Paris to religious leaders at a Lyon-area mosque in the southeast.

Arson attacks that hopscotched around the country, destroying schools, gymnasiums, public buildings, public transport and cars, have declined in recent days, but stretched into a 16th day despite the calls for peace, with more than 300 cars torched across the country and 119 people arrested overnight into Saturday.

In the south, an attacker threw two firebombs into a mosque during Friday prayers, causing minor damage. It was not immediately clear if the attack was linked to the wider unrest.

With a state of emergency in place, several hundred people gathered Friday at the glassy Wall of Peace near the Eiffel Tower to call for an end to the unrest that erupted Oct. 27 and spread across the country.

The demonstration drew elderly Parisians and youths from its poor working-class suburbs along with curious onlookers, all engaging in heated debate over how to stem the violence and tackle the causes.

Authorities have acknowledged the roots of the problem are deep-seated, perhaps linked to the French approach to immigration which works to fit immigrants, whatever their origins, into a single mold. Soaring unemployment, poverty and discrimination are common in towns that ring the large cities

"The violence of the last 15 days expresses the frustration of 30 years of denying recognition to the populations living in these neighborhoods," said Hassan Ben M'Barek, a spokesman for Suburbs Respect, which organized the demonstration.

Yeah tomorrow is the big day. I wonder if the Islamics will achieve their stated goal of taking over the Champs Elysees and the Arc de Triomphe.

Shouldn't be hard, all they have to do is walk up to it... the police will run as to not offend.

Guess they've got it figured out. At least the writer of this story does.

All the smart people have moved their cars to areas where the Muslims can't burn them.

The calm belies a major offensive on preschools and kindergardens.

I can see them thinking that it will be good to get back to normal. Only 100 cars a night. On the other hand we have that many people killed every night.

The sight of a police uniform is usually quelling to rioters.

It seems strange that the rioters interviewed on the news say they haven't seen anyone in police uniforms.

Those uniforms must not be very distinctive from the back.

I hope the Islamics overplay their hand bigtime. So far France has been paralysed by the razzle dazzle Inifada style footwork. A big move, especially involving loss of French lives, might galvanize popular support for action, maybe even topple the government.

News reports suggest that the diminishing number of cars burned per night indicates the situation is calming-down. But how many cars are there to be burned in those areas? Maybe they're just running out of them!
