SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Voters in famously liberal San Francisco overwhelmingly approved measures banning handguns and encouraging schools to keep military recruiters off campus, according to election results on Wednesday. ADVERTISEMENT

With 100 percent of precincts reporting results from Tuesday's election, Measure H, which prohibits San Franciscans from owning handguns and bans the sale of all firearms and ammunition in the city, passed with 57.9 percent of the vote.

The National Rifle Association said the measure's passage would prove a "hollow victory" for gun control activists and that it would file a lawsuit challenging the measure.

"Lawful residents of San Francisco are being stripped of their freedom because of an illegal measure that defies common sense. We will fight this outrageous assault on the rights of law-abiding San Franciscans and I believe that we will prevail," association vice-president Wayne LaPierre said in statement.

Measure I, a largely symbolic "declaration of policy that the people of San Francisco oppose the federal government's use of public schools to recruit students for service in the military," passed with 59.7 percent of votes.

The measure will have no effect on military recruiters as they are allowed on school grounds under federal law, according to U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Ellen Krenke, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Defense.

At least a used condom served a worthwhile purpose.

I have no problem with any institution banning military recruiters on their premises.

Just send a check back to Washington worth every federal penny you receive, and there won't be a problem.

Because liberalism breeds dependency and strips personal responsibility. New Orleans is a perfect example of liberalism in action.....people did nothing to prepare or to try and evacuate and then complained when "service" was too slow for them.

Conservatism breeds independence and individualism that are the underpinnings of this nation.

I agree with you 100% You dont want the military, you shouldnt be forced to accept any federal funds.. I dont believe I dopnt call 57.9% an overwhelming vote against handguns either. I would guess the turnout was low and all the idiots showed up to vote.

If a massive earthquake hit SF and trapped 500 students in collapsed dorms, would they allow the National Guard on campus then?

I imagine their collective opinion regarding handguns would change if they were infested with armed gangs of looters after a natural disaster.

Exactly. In fact, I think this is how the military has put a stop to this kind nonsense in the past (Harvard?).

SanFrancisco is polluted with gangs and drug violence. The liberal gov't distributes clean needles and would like to provide free drugs in exchange for some safety.

No, liberalism is a mental disorder that cannot be cured so easily.

Declare San Francisco a foreign country and put a fence around it. Stop all federal money from being spent there and boycott all products made, or companies that have headquarters in SF, in this vile foul place of anti-American Communist crap.

Can anyone get a list. I start my boycott today.

If we had a federal governmnet with testacles - and of course we do not - we haven't in at least a century - they would cut off ALL Federal aid to San Francisco for violating the Constitution on the firearms ban, and for refusing to allow Federal Agents to conduct their duties, i. e. recruit troops.

As long as we continue to pander to these freaks, they will multiple and become even more emboldened.

Two comments (paraphrased) I heard from N.O. officials after Katrina:

The looters were drug addicts just trying to get their fix.
(this was portrayed as a justification of the violence)

The reason so many stayed behind is that they were waiting for their (government) checks, and were planning to leave as soon as they got them.
