Indians in France wary after riots

NDTV Correspondent

Tuesday, November 8, 2005 (Paris ):

In the wake of the riots in Paris, the Indian community in France is living in apprehension.

Shingara Singh Mann runs an internet cafe in Paris. He has been living in the suburbs with his family since 1978.

Even though he holds a French passport, he says that he has had to struggle to get his due in the country.

He is worried that the rioting will make his day to day life hard as people will get suspicious of all minority communities in general.

One young girl who was born in France says she feels more French than Indian. But things have changed after the riots.

"It's really very bad for us. For instance there are some very decent people who want to get their papers here, but they will have problems because they won't be trusted," she said.

"It will only make things more difficult for the integration in France. Unfortunately these kids don't have the education to think about all this," she added.

Dialogue for solution

Madan, who runs a travel agency thinks that the dialogue and not violence is the solution.

"It's not that we are not French but there is discrimination. If we are of Indian, Arabian or African origin, it's not easy to find a job. But this is not the way to fight for things.

"These people don't want to integrate themselves into French society and the parents haven't been responsible enough to make sure they go to school. These young people are not balanced," said Madan.

The riots in France have entered the twelfth day today, with violence having spread beyond Paris.

Well, the good news is that your government wants to take over control of the internet, so you're in luck!

I wonder...do Indians speak French in the same wonderfully precisely clipped fashion as they speak English?

I like Indians...they are incredibly bright and hardworking and friendly. Indians are awfully hard to confuse with angry muslims, but we must all be on our toes not to confuse the good with the bad.

The Indians should start rioting, too. That way France will give them free stuff.

I doubt it. Remember that India used to be a British colony.

That's the problem -- the issue is not race, the Indians look similar to Beurs, but the problem is the cult of the moon god. it's the same in the UK

I have had many Indian friends over the years and they were all happy and chatty. The sincere muslims I have known were sullen and dark...and it showed in their faces. Of course, apostate muslims are just like Indians and the rest of us...without the infection of Islam, people are usually pretty nice.

Well, not completely -- The French lost the battle for India, around the same time as the American war of Independence (the Brits having lost America could devote more resources in India), but they retained Pondicherry near Madras -- that's one place in India where French is the lingua franca. Then, there's Goa which was ruled by the Portuguese from 1500 to 1960 where Portuguese and dialects are spoken. Of course, most Indians seem to be at least trilingual

I wish some of the French newspapers, and politicians would address the issue of why their citizens of the Hindu faith are NOT RIOTING. Maybe they know the answer and do not want to talk about it.

A new "French and Indian War" seems in the making.

Indians tend to produce.
Muslims tend to destroy.

Relax, guys.

why their citizens of the Hindu faith are NOT RIOTING

What about their Christian citizens who come from Syria, Egypt, Armenia etc., all brown-skinned and/or Arabbic backgrounds. they aren't rioting, are they?
