Islam outranks police on estates

PARIS: The sight of bearded Muslim activists with megaphones wading into the mayhem of the housing estates and urging rioting teenagers to stop destroying property and go home "in the name of Allah" has unnerved many in France.

For the Government, the Muslim mediators have been playing a useful role calming hotheaded youths from the mainly Arab estates who respect their authority more than that of the police and local officials.

The mediators have been bolstered by a fatwa issued by the Muslim organisation the Union of Islamic Organisations of France. The fatwa, posted on the internet, quotes the Koran as saying that "God abhors destruction and disorder and rejects those who inflict it". The fatwa started a feud with the mainstream Muslim Council, which said the edict equated Islam with the vandalism.

The Muslim mentors of the estates, who style themselves as "big brothers", are causing unease as they symbolise what many in France see as a root of the unrest: the isolation of Arab and black minorities into ghettos where Muslim law prevails.

There is widespread belief, denied by authorities, that the unrest is being fostered by Islamists. There are also fears that extremists may use the power vacuum to strengthen their hold on some suburbs. Non-Muslim estate mediators also disapprove of the presence of the Islamic brothers as peacekeepers.

A street version of radical Islam does permeate the youth culture of the estates, where Osama bin Laden is a hero, George Bush and Israel are evil and French President Jacques Chirac's state wants to stifle their religion and identity by banning Muslim headscarves in schools. The young wreckers cite the "disrespect" by the state for their religion as part of the origin of their revolt.

The chief target is Nicolas Sarkozy, the Interior Minister, who has so far refused to apologise for an incident in which a police tear-gas grenade was thrown into a mosque.

But radicals are not behind the present violence, say experts such as the Renseignements Generaux, the police intelligence service.

Paris chief prosecutor Yves Bot said the unrest was not being driven by Islamic ideology.

"At the moment, we note that it is essentially directed against the institutions of the republic and it is not a movement that has taken a religious turn," he said.

Mr Bot said the attacks were being co-ordinated locally using mobile telephones but there was no central command.

It's all part of the scam.

Step 1, create unrest.

Step 2, let the French police fail to stop the unrest.

Step 3, come in and "save the day."

Step 4, set up Islamic police and courts because the French state failed.

So far the French government is giving up the country with both hands. Shall we start a betting pool to guess the date on which France will cease to be a European nation and become a Muslim state?

The truth shall set you free, but lying to yourself turns you French.
