PARIS - A curfew was set up yesterday at Le Raincy, a neighborhood in the eastern suburbs of Paris. The order was issued by the local conservative mayor, Eric Raoult. The prime minister, Dominique de Villepin, made clear on television that similar measures might soon be enforced on a broader scale. "Restoring public safety is our top priority," he said. After 11 days and nights of rioting, the country was coming close to a civil war.
A map published in the afternoon by Le Monde showed that ethnic violence - the "French Intifada," as it is being referred to by some journalists and political leaders - had spread almost all over the country, with the exception of Inner Brittany, western Normandy, and Burgundy, where North African and black communities are small, and Corsica, where a large North African community is held in check by a local nationalist movement that itself is prone to violence. Most major cities, including Lyons, Marseille, Lille, Toulouse, and Bordeaux, have been hit.

The US cemetary in Normandy is quite some distance from Paris, in a area with very few North African or Muslim immigrants (they are clustered in the big cities and the south). The cemetary is US territory, but police and security responsibilities are handled by the French. They actually take the job pretty seriously too - there have been a few incidents of vandalism over the years, but in general the gravesites are held sacrosanct even by the French.

It would seem that the population of Palestinians, errr French Youth, errr North Africans, ummm Muzzy Terrorists is low in the region. Hopefully the locals are sharpening their pitchforks and breaking out Grandpa's long hidden birdgun to control the ones who have invaded, ummm live there.

JTA reporting Jewish cemeteries have been vandalized by rioting Muslims.
Pretty miserable, imo.
I had a friend in the military who retired and went to work for the Commission. His wife was French and he retired in France to work at one of the cemeteries.
I was thiking last night of these cemeteries and of the indigenous French people as reasons we do not want France to be destroyed by these vandals.
The government is pathetic but many of the indigenous French still love the U.S. I wonder how many of our American WWII heroes are buried in France; at least thousands.
Which raises a question I've been wondering about. The first reports were that the rioting was mostly confined to the muslim neighborhoods. Has that changed? I know that it has spread to other cities but is it still located in the muslim districts in those cities as well or is it starting to spill over into non-muslim (traditional French) communities?
We value our war dead. Our concern is genuine and with good reason. The graves have already been desecrated once, we don't want to see happen again.

You say that there would be "...no reason" for the rioters to desecrate these cemeteries. From that I take it that you know the reasons for these riots. I would appreciate it greatly if you would enlighten this dumb US-Citizen.

Visited those cemeteries just this spring. Beautiful, very well kept and dignified. Appropriate for the fallen.
The Germans and French will claim this to be “mobs”, disenfranchised youth. The political left can’t accept the fact that we are in a global war against radical Islamists. It would also pressure the Germans and French to act more in this war, which they do not want to. So they feel compelled to downplay the significance and true reasons for these problems. In France as in Germany these people REFUSE to integrate. In fact, they see the French and Germans as the “infidels”, the dirty decedent perverts. The Germans “ONCE” reported on the hate preached in those Mosques in Germany. Quickly forgotten and buried in the mass trash media. Does not fit into the “all is well”, “It’s an American made up issue and really just about the oil”. Bottom line is that you actually have a point.
1. The Islamist will go after weak spots (opportunistic). Once the French crack down they will want to strike out elsewhere. Defacing US cemeteries is an easy target and a low threat.
2. It’s predominantly Christian and Jews buried there, so it’s no skin off their nose to deface them.
3. The US has become the leading nation in the fight against radical Islam, so we are target #1.
Our cemeteries could potentially be vandalized. Of course when that happens the European media will say it’s the mad Islamists who hate the hegemony USA for helping Israel or maybe because of the Iraq war. Central Continental Europe has gone “stupid”.
