Eastpointe Squirrel Feeder Faces Charges Again

Woman's Case Drew Widespread Attention In 2002

POSTED: 10:00 am EST November 8, 2005

EASTPOINTE, Mich. -- The city of Eastpointe has hauled one of its better-known animal lovers back into court.

Luminita Marinas (pictured, right), 65, faces criminal charges of setting out walnuts for squirrels near her home. She faces a maximum fine of 90 days in jail and a $500 fine.

In a case that drew widespread media coverage in 2002, Marinas pleaded guilty to littering for feeding squirrels.

Marinas was placed on six months' probation and fined $250. City officials worked out an arrangement that allowed her to feed squirrels in five specific outdoor locations.

Marinas said she is being harassed.

When walnuts are outlawed only outlaws will have walnuts.

Excuse me: In a day when rapists get off with time served, a city actually has a law on the books permitting jail time for feeding squirrels?

If you're holding your nuts, that's your own business.

I bet she is feeding them corn. Corn stalks will sprout up all over come spring. The ethanol industry is probably suffering a shortage due to her activities not to mention the unauthorized planting throwing off the governments subsidy program.

Don't feed rodents.

Seriously, the squirls are gonna make a mess if you bring them all to one location to eat. The city council worked with her to find places where that mess wouldn't be an issue, and she continues to litter anyway.

If she's unwilling to make reasonable choices to avoid disrupting others lives, then she deserves to be fined. If the fines don't get the point across, put her under house arrest.

People should not have their freedom infringed upon if they don't adversly effect others with their actions. However, if they are inconsiderate of others, then they deserve what they get.

She is obviously a supporter of the squirrel terrorism network...bird feeder attacks and the like.

Put her on a plane to gitmo and find out who she's working for...and don't be gentle.

Are you serious????

Feeding squirrels causes such hardship and loss of liberty that you want to put this woman in JAIL??

I thought I'd seen every example of overzealous thuggery on FR but I do believe this takes the cake.

The whole subject of squirrels can be contoversial. A lot of people feed them because they're cute and fun to watch, but they dig holes in the yard and do other damage.

I had one "plant" a kernel of corn in my gardenin the the fall and in the spring a stalk grew and by summer's end had born three ears of corn. I let "Squire El" have them because he had planted the corn, although he thought he was just storing a kernel.

Perhaps you could bring your considerable influence to bear and intercede on her behalf.

Happens at my house, too. Both the squirrels and the jays plant seeds, some of which end up growing. I suspect that the hiding instinct leads to unfound seeds everywhere. That helps insure a crop the next year for the next squirrel generation. Very cool.

It's just a squirrel...tryin' to get a nut.

An Eastpointe woman was charged with littering for feeding squirrels. On Tuesday, she was told she could feed them on a limited basis. What do you think?

I just spent a few thousand dollars having squirrel damage to my house repaired, and I keep a pellet gun around to shoot any that put in an appearance. Attracting large numbers of tree rats is a bad idea, especially if they decide to go after the neighbors' houses..
