PARIS, Nov. 7 - The civil unrest sweeping France spread to nearly every major city in the country by Monday, claiming its first death, and even touched two cities elsewhere in Europe as the French government sought to reassure a jittery nation that it can quickly bring the escalating situation under control....

[Many paragraphs later...]

While the violence has not taken on religious overtones, most of the young people involved are nominally Muslim, raising fears that Islamist groups could capitalize on the unrest to recruit new members. Internet postings from one such movement encouraged young Muslims elsewhere in Europe to riot in the name of Islam.

"Oh, you Muslim people in Europe, walk with and like your brothers in Paris and learn that these people are dogs," read a message posted on Monday on the popular Web site of a dissident based in London. "Teach them that we are a single nation and if a single member is touched, then all the others will erupt like a burning volcano."

The Web site, the same one that has posted claims of responsibility for terrorist attacks including the July 7 bombings in London, showed images of vehicles in flames and a photo image of a smiling Mr. Sarkozy, dressed as a gangster in a black suit and alligator coat and carrying a machine gun in each hand....

They're going to wave their magic welfare-state wand and poof . . .

the problem will disappear from all French TV sets.

Using the logic of the above statement it means that if we take one out, we have to take them all out. Works for me.

It was very interesting talking to a French girl I dated not too long ago tonight.

In her eyes, the Muslims were extremists trying to overtake France. She wanted the military to put these riots to rest, the non-citizens of France deported, and immigration halted. She saw them as a threat to her nation and the politicans as doing nothing.

Okay, surprised this is a French girl? To be fair, she lived in the south (as in a southern US state for a year) and is a fairly devout Catholic. But very interesting hearing this from a French girl when our media is doing everything it can to sweep all of this away as some failure of the French to give enough.

Oh yeah, she also said that the problem was that the French gave them all these handouts and they never had to work or even wanted to work.

Think she should be running against Chirac? I'm all for it. ;)
