Seventh night of Paris violence
BBC ^ | Nov. 3, 2005 | None

Violence has flared for a seventh night in immigrant communities to the north-east of Paris.

Youths in several areas have been roaming the streets with sticks and bottles and dozens of vehicles have been set alight during the night.

The unrest came after ministers held crisis talks on the situation and the president appealed for calm.

Violence broke out following the death of two teenagers. Locals say they were fleeing police, which authorities deny.

On Wednesday night police clashed with youths in nine areas of the Seine-Saint-Denis department - where the violence began last week.

A school and shops have also been damaged.

Political 'rebuke'

The prime minister and interior minister have delayed trips abroad to try to calm the unrest.

Late on Wednesday Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin summoned ministers to a meeting, from which no details have emerged.

However, he told parliament a disruptive minority should not be confused with the majority, who want to integrate.

"Let's avoid stigmatising areas," he said.

"Let's... avoid confusing a disruptive minority with the vast majority of youngsters who want to integrate into society and succeed."

Correspondents say Mr de Villepin's comments were a rebuke to his political rival, Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy, who has called the rioters "scum".

Mr Chirac warned earlier of a "dangerous situation".

"The law must be applied in a spirit of dialogue and respect," he said.

Social problems

Dozens of vehicles have been torched and more than 30 arrests have been made since the violence began last week.

Unrest flared in Clichy-sous-Bois after two teenage boys of North African origin were electrocuted on Thursday at an electricity sub-station.

Local people insist they were fleeing from police and scrambled in to hide. Police say they were not chasing the boys.

An official investigation is under way.

Clichy saw five successive nights of confrontation between police and young people from the mainly north African Muslim communities in the north-eastern suburb.

Correspondents say anger grew after a tear gas canister was hurled into a mosque in Clichy on Sunday night. Emotions have also been fuelled by mass arrests.

Unemployment and social problems are rife in many of France's poorer suburban areas.

In recent days there have also been incidents involving groups of youths in other departments near Paris - including the Val-d'Oise, Seine-et-Marne, Hauts-de-Seine and Yvelines.

Before someone asks "why hasn't the MSM picked this up in the U.S.?", the Paris violence was reported on tonight's CBS Evening News.

Good thing they stayed out of Iraq or those Muslim youths would really be mad.

I am confused. I thought these high taxing left-wing countries didn't have social problems? Hmmm. Well, might as well just lower taxes, regulations and let the unemployment rate fall and solve the social problems....thank God Reagan was an American.....

It's amazing how engrained the appeasement is, and how unwilling people are to call this out explicitly as "Muslims behaving badly", as if their culture didn't have anything to do with what is happening.

CNN is covering it...but I haven't seen it anywhere else. Haven't really checked around though.

I notice the BBC is trying to downplay the Muslim "coincidence" much like CNN has been doing. deVillipin's quotes early in the article don't even make sense unless one reads on and infers that he is speaking of a "minority" of Muslim youth. It wouldn't suit the MSM to point out that Muslims are rioting in France - that would leave too many liberal/anti-war activists dumbfounded.

UPDATED Article on CNN this morning...

Unrest spreads to nine French towns
CNN.com - POSTED: Wednesday, November 2, 2005; Posted: 2:07 a.m. EST (07:07 GMT)

EXCERPT:
PARIS, France (AP) -- Unrest spread across troubled suburbs around Paris in a sixth night of violence as police clashed with angry youths and scores of vehicles were torched in at least nine towns, local officials said.
(...)The area, home mainly to families of immigrant origin, often from Muslim North Africa, is marked by soaring unemployment and delinquency. Anger and despair thrive in the tall cinder-block towers and long "bars" that typically make up housing projects in France.

On the face of it, the French refusal to participate in the liberation of Iraq bought them, what, two or three years?

The BBC just reported that tonight a police station was briefly taken over, a car showroom was set on fire, two schools were damaged, and police vans were stoned, had gasoline thrown at them and had to retreat.

a police station was briefly taken over?!?!?

Thanks for the update...That's not good at all.

The other day a police union spokesperson was saying it was a "civil war" and that their policemen were ill-equipped and untrained in dealing with street violence of this sort. They were talking about wanting to get the military in there...

My Dish has been out of action since WILMA did a number on it, and it won't be repaired until 10 Nov. In the meantime, I am forced to watch the "news" on a battery-operated 5" TV. I had on Brian Williams of NBC on this evening, and was specifically looking for any reference to the moslem riots in Paris. I didn't see one mention of it.

Thank God for the FreeRepublic.

We all know what this means. Chirac is fighting the urge to surrender to the Muslim thugs after seven days. That famous white flag will be hoisted soon....

Shame on all of you! Don't you know these aren't out of control thugs and rioters? These are freedom fighters! They are being oppressed! Maybe we should get NATO to bomb France like we did in Bosnia to protect the Muslims.

Know what i guess these muslim thugs needs firepower...

One character i observed about dealing with muslims is FORCE... never appease them, they can be violently dominant...

I'd say... tell them to stop these things and if they dont send them on buses to the airport and prepare all international flights for North Africa, those who resist shoot them...!

MUSLIMS NEVER OBEY RULES... FYI!
