College Bans Dormitory Bible Studies

In a shameful attack on freedom of religion, the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire (UWEC) has banned resident assistants (RAs) from leading Bible studies in their own dormitories.

The university claims the ban is necessary because some students might not feel RAs who lead Bible studies are "approachable.”

Are you sure? Maybe in San Diego (and other progressive universities) they would.

Despite ban, porn back on UCSD TV

"Pornography has returned to the airwaves of a UCSD student-run television station, despite a student leaders' vote earlier this week to ban nudity and sex." (snip - more at link!)

The man is Mike Weiner. The character is Michael Savage. They share one mindset but two personas.

The rants are part of his act - if you listen closely you can sometimes hear him laughing during and after them, or trying to contain laughter.

In any case, to the extent that's not clear to folks, you are correct: the character of Mike Savage does undermine his message on occasion.

Yep. They're employees. They receive compensation, in the form of free rent. They have job descriptions, duties, and responsibilities assigned to them by their employer

So in other words, if you are Christian who leads bible studies, you need not apply for an RA position?

So basically we should have a religious litmus test that bars believing Christians from being R.A.s because some people may think that they might morally disagree with their actions? This is precisely the type of anti-religious bigotry and climate of hatred that the liberals have created in this country. It is sick and disgusting that one cannot be an "out and proud" Christian believer in this country. I think it is you and the narrow minded and intolerant students who have a problem with Christians who are the problem here! We used to be a relatively tolerant society. Now, it's anything goes, as long as one is not a traditional Christian believer. Absolutely disgusting.

I don't think being an RA forfeits your constitutional rights.

Misleading title. What they banned was having employees of the school lead Bible studies. Dorm Resident Managers and Assistants are employees of the school.

It doesn't even go that far. The article specifies that RAs can't lead Bible studies in their own dorms. There's no restriction mentioned on their leading a class at the student center, on the quad, or, presumably, in someone else's dorm.

It's a narrow rule -- the school doesn't want its secular authority figures also acting as religious leaders in their area of responsibility (i.e. the dorm). It doesn't bother me. I know it'll bother some folks, but don't make more out of it than it is.

Doesn't matter. University still has no right to ban something like this. What if it were a professor, on their own time, doing the same thing in one of the buildings there? First amendment says that is A-OK. The University can even have a chapel on campus, and many do, including state schools.

Oh now I understand, if you receive any kind of remittance from the government you automatically give up your God given civil rights. Now all we have to do is have some judges expand the definition of remittance to include the air we breathe.

It is only a matter of time till, how shall we say, more aggressive means, are proposed to rid the liberal world of Christ.

Funny thing though, if you remove the Cross from the town square, all sorts of dark things crawl into it.

They DO have days off, however, so conceivably they could have Bible study at those times, right? Or is the University is saying they can regulate the activities of an employee's day OFF?

This is all so freakin' unbelievable...

Sounds like Multiple Personality Disorder.
(although if my last name was Weiner, I'd use a stage name too.)

What happened to the Democrats scream to the Right to privacy. Oh yea, that's only if you want to murder your unborn child.

A point I have made on this very day on another thread.

You're missing my whole point. Bible studies and gay sex with multiple partners are both closed door activities where most of the students in the dorm would be passively aware of and could be unconfortable with.

Forget the ACLU; ACLJ is the choice to fight this bigotry. The ACLU sees the Bill of Rights as a menu from which to select their preferred rights to defend. Have you ever heard of the ACLU defending the second amendment, for example?

Bibles...No. Pornography recorded on campus and telecast on the dorm cable network...Why yes, of course!
