A hot issue will be a 1991 ruling on a Pennsylvania law requiring a woman to tell her husband before having an abortion except in cases where spousal abuse or threat is involved or the child isn't her husband's.
Alito voted to uphold the provision, which was later struck down by the Supreme Court. Polls, however, show most Americans favor spousal-notification laws.
But Alito's dissent was limited and said nothing about his overall legal views on abortion. In more recent cases, he ruled against a ban on "partial-birth" abortion and against restrictions on Medicaid-funded abortions for rape victims.
Italian-American groups were thrilled since Alito would be the second Italian-American on the high court after Justice Antonin Scalia.
The Sons of Italy took strong exception to an anti-Alito e-mail sent by the Democratic National Committee that said a top reason to oppose Alito is that he "failed to obtain conviction of 20 mobsters" in a Mafia case 17 years ago.
"To intimate that he is soft on crime because of his Italian descent is tantamount to character assassination and ethnic stereotyping," said the Sons of Italy's Dona de Sanctis, stressing the group doesn't endorse candidates.
DNC spokesman Josh Earnest defended the anti-Alito talking points, which were sent out anonymously, saying, "It's appropriate for the Senate to consider his entire record, including as U.S. attorney."

"Josh Earnest? You won't see him no more."
Leave the gun. Take the canoles.
Well, as long as he's not tough on the Union Corse or Dillinger's relatives, I am not concerned.
If I were in the leadership, I'd play the stereotyping card here to the max. It's about time we start calling the Dems on who they are, not who they profess to be.
But is it true though.?.
BWHAHAHAHAHAHAH!
BWHAHAHAHAHAHAH!
Absolutely brilliant!
It's not easy bein' sleazy...........
The Italian-American Anti-Defamation league will not be amused...........
I wish that my Grandparents, born in Sicily, would have lived to see this day. My Grandmother would cry with joy. No matter how much dirt, real or imagined, that the denomRATs throw on Alito, she would have been proud of the fact that people from her Country of birth, were on, and being considered for the Supreme Court of the United States of America. My "Nanny" was so grateful to be here, in this Country, that she told us, every day, to thank God, that we were lucky enough to be born in America. If a liberal could have spent a week with my Nanny, they would have converted to our side, and wondered why the hell that they ever doubted that this is the greatest Country in the world. Don't bother to pray for her, she is where she wanted and deserves to be.
No telling. They're already lower than whale $ _ it.
Don't think this is rock bottom. Soon they will be comparing him to Mussolini.
Hey you! Where da phuk do you get off acting like every Italian guy is a wise guy? There ain't no mafia. Who gave yous dat idea? C'mon, let's go for a boat ride? Now!
