HH: Senator DeWine, welcome to the Hugh Hewitt Show. As a son of Warren, Ohio, and a grandson of Ashtabula, Ohio, it's great to talk to a Buckeye State Senator.
MD: All right. That's great. Good to be with you. Thank you very much.
HH: Your reaction to the nomination of Judge Alito?
MD: Well, I think it's been a great, great pick. I think the president really has hit a home run here.
HH: Now, Senator DeWine, you are on the Judiciary Committee. Senator Schumer, your colleague, came out and said this is going to take a long time to get ready. We've got to read everything. Don't expect anything anytime this year. Your reaction to Senator Schumer's slow-down tactics?
MD: Well, there's no reason we can't get this nomination through by the end of the year. We need to get this job done, and we certainly can do it. We can have hearings, and we can move forward.
HH: Your colleague on judiciary, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, said yesterday on Face The Nation, that if Democrats attempt to filibuster, he will work to break it, meaning that this is not something the Gang of 14 had in mind. Do you agree with Senator Graham that this is not a filibusterable nomination?
MD: Oh, I absolutely do. I mean, this is not under what our definition of extraordinary circumstances is. This is a nomination that's clearly within the mainstream of conservative judges. This is someone who has a long, distinguished record, someone who I would classify as kind of a classic conservative justice, who believes you should decide each case one at a time, you should not be a judicial activist, you should not be intrusive, that a judge should kind of sit back, wait for that case to come, and then make a decision on the case, but not be really a legislator. And really, that's what this judge's record would, at least seem to me, to show.
OK, good news, that sounds like 2 votes now to end the fillibuster.
Agreed. It's all about getting the necessary votes. Something, I tried many times to explain on this board.
This is what needs to happen NOW. At least three members of the gang of 7 need to come forward and say, clearly, no fillibuster is going to happen here.
One thing is for certain, McCain, Collins, Snowe, and Chaffe will bend into pretzels to try not and break the fillibuster. McCain doesn't have the guts to go against his main constituency, the MSM.
Our fight was not in reality Miers, but the fact that the process was Borked. I think you will find those of us who supported Miers are moving on.

McCain knows if he is the roadblock to this nominee, his chances at the GOP nod will be absolute zero. McCain knows when he can be a maverick and media darling and what the policial reality it.
Yea, two of the SAME votes who jumped in bed with the Dims to KEEP the filibuster. He and Pansy Graham get no credit from me. To quit choking someone is not saving their life.
OK, but I think you are failing to understand McCain. McCain is a Beltway Guy. He thinks the key to gaining the nomination is wooing the MSM. Moreoever, McCain has actual disdain for the Republican base. He hates us, no, that is not strong enough a word. He despises us. Of course he can't get the nomination without the base, but he doesn't think or know that. He, like the MSM, believes the Republican base are a bunch of stupid hicks.
Credit doesn't matter, their votes to end the fillibuster do matter.
If they (and 5 other Rino's) had done the right thing to begin with, the filibustering of judicial nominees would have been ended months ago. They are the reason it's still an issue and should be honest enough to admit so.
He's smarter than that. Even he can figure out that going against this pick is political suicide. Conservatives, who tend to vote in Primaries will eat his lunch and send him packing early.

Actually, this is great news - assuming DeWine keeps his word, of course. His vote and Graham's means a 50-50 tie if the Constitutional Option becomes necessary, which of course gets broken by Cheney.
Yup and now we have to prevent the Dems from delaying with endless requests for info, etc. THAT'S why it's important to keep control of the Senate!
