Clinton to Dems: Don't Fear Tough Issues

AUSTIN, Texas - Democrats can't be afraid to talk about hot-button issues, including abortion, and should fight back against personal attacks from conservatives if they want to regain power in Washington, former President Bill Clinton said Saturday.

"You can't say, 'Please don't be mean to me. Please let me win sometimes.' Give me a break here," Clinton said. "If you don't want to fight for the future and you can't figure out how to beat these people then find something else to do."

Clinton, whose 2004 memoir "My Life" was a best seller, drew roaring applause during his speech from the several hundred people gathered in the Texas House chamber to kick off the 10th annual Texas Book Festival, an event started by first lady Laura Bush when her husband was governor.

The event, which raises money for public libraries, is expected to draw as many as 30,000 people and authors including novelist Salman Rushdie, historian David McCullough and children's author Lemony Snicket.

Clinton attributed Republicans' control of Congress to Democratic candidates' inability or unwillingness to "stand up and be heard" on issues that matter to people. For example, he said, Democrats too often are unwilling to talk about abortion because they're afraid of virulent reactions from anti-abortion groups.

"So how come we can't talk about it?" he asked. "Because we basically let political ads turn every player in this drama into a two-dimensional cartoon instead of a three-dimensional person."

Clinton also criticized political reporters and authors for failing to use reason and common sense in their writing and failing to dig deeply into stories. Instead, he said, reporters let officials get away with saying things that aren't true so stories include comment from both sides.

The former president did not take questions from reporters and did not talk about the possibility that his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., will run for president in 2008.

He also did not address the Friday indictment of the vice president's chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby Jr., on charges of obstruction of justice, perjury and making false statements, other than to say the Republican Party has had "a few bad days here lately."

Clinton to Dems: Don't Fear Tough Issues

Yeah, avoid them and then say that you want to get back to doing "the people's business."

Exactly!

Clintoon needs to do what he does best. Have more of that stuff he doesn't consider sex.

I'm still amazed he hasn't opened an adult book and movie store, or is that what the Clintoon Library really is?

The toughest issue that the Democrats ware unwilling to face is this: The Party has a pus-filled boil on its butt that infects everything it is and tries to do. Until it is lanced, the whole Party will be sick.

That pus-filled boil is named Clinton (him or her, take your pick). Until the Party lances and drains that boil, its sickness will continue. But Clinton (him or her) is not going to notice, much less mention, this "issue."

Did I miss anything?

Normal voters freak out when they glimpse what the left is all about. Clinton of all people knows this: It defined both his presidential campaigns. If you're so far left that the Miers opposition looks like "the far right," your best bet is spouting platitudes, keeping quiet about big issues, and developing a cult of personality.

How about being honest, Bill...not one of your strengths we know. THe rise of Republicans is a direct result of your total lack of morals, your incompetence in dealing with terrorism, your treason when dealing with N Korea, China and Iran, and your decision to tear this country apart by pitting people against people, race against race, all in the name of Bill Clinton's political viability.

As usual, Bill Clinton loves to hear himself talk about how great he is..the ultimate narcissist. Of course, every time he does, it just galvanizes his opponents.

Don't fear tough issues.

Remember, the truth is like a brick. And a half-truth is like half a brick. You can throw it twice as far.

As soon as Bubba said "Don't be mean to me", let me win some of the time", I recalled writing at FR about Hillery playing "Little Girl" with Lazio....Bubba said just about what I said about the Hillary/Lazio cutsey she pulled. His girly-talk words = Hillary. He doesn't give a sh** about Hillary. He just wants a nice ambassador's job in the end and with Hillary on the other side of the world.

Most of hear the Dems load and clear: they are the party of murder, treason and socialism.

No amount of turd-polishing is going to make it any different.

Probably one of the most notable qualities of many liberals/leftists, whether relatively high profile ones or just ones you encounter in day to day life, is their inability to be straightforward on a variety of issues.

I tend to be very straightforward in my well thought out opinions, and I'm not afraid to say I don't know enough about a topic of have no opinion on it (yet). It's not uncommon to ask a political liberal a straightforward question, and immediately see their physiology change, and their eyes dart from left to right, as they try to frame a palatable answer that masks their unpalatable opinion.

Truly they spend more time being evasive about answers than directly answering the questions. I try to follow up with good questions, which tends to make their responses more evasive.

One of my favorite gimmicks is when they tell me that that they aren't sure about aspects of the issue, and the subtext is that this uncertainty somehow leaves them with the liberal position.

I often follow up with the importance of certainty: why do they demand certainty on this policy issue? When else is certainty important to them? When is certainty unimportant, or less important? How are they ever really certain about any policy effect? How do they know when they are certain or not? Specifically what about the issue is so ambiguous to undermine their sense of certainty?

My favorite is when they thoughtfully then try to say that they aren't sure about elements of the issue, I remind them that in fact is what ambiguity means - so whats ambiguous about what they find ambiguous?

I tend to be friendly and genuinely curious about their thought process, and not confrontational or browbeating. It is remarkably easy to make people look bad using this strategy.

And as I said, the average liberal could avoid it by saying, for example, "No, I don't mind at all that women can end their pregnancy for any or no reason." In many cases (though not all) even the liberal shill on the street has remarkable reluctance to articulate their opinion on many matters.

It's like pulling teeth but it is fun. Of course, I have answers to these questions should they turn them on me. It's a side-effect of actually thinking things out.
