In Canada the Prime Minister is more than
primus inter pares. He is truly the effective leader of the country and holds vast patronage powers. All without the messy need to get approval from Parliament or even through a vote of the people. The ruling Liberal Party has made itself and the nation one and the same. Its hard to tell where the party begins and the government ends. And neither the PM nor the Government is interested in public opinion. When you get to sit for five years, the only time you need to consider it is when an election writ is dropped. Yes, democracy in Canada is very different from democracy in America. The union of the executive and the legislative branch in the Cabinet renders checks and balances superfluous.
("Denny Crane: Gun Control? For Communists. She's a liberal. Can't hunt.")
In the case of Prime Minister Paul Martin, he is trying so hard to be the DICTATOR of Canada, and pushing further and further to do so. Democratic deficit he was talking about? He really meant to say Dictatorship deficit!
