Dr. Dobson Says Bush Made 'Wise Decision' on Miers Nomination
Focus on the Family ^ | 10/27/05 | Dr. Dobson

Focus Action founder believes president was right to accept her withdrawal as SCOTUS nominee. Colorado Springs, Colo.

-- Focus on the Family Action founder and chairman Dr. James C. Dobson issued the following statement today in response to Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers' decision to withdraw her name from consideration:

"I believe the president has made a wise decision in accepting Harriet Miers' withdrawal as a nominee to the Supreme Court.

"In recent days I have grown increasingly concerned about her conservative credentials, and I was dismayed to learn this week about her speech in 1993, in which she sounded pro-abortion themes, and expressed so much praise for left-wing feminist leaders.

"When the president announced this nominee, I expressed my tentative support, based on what I was able to discover about her. But I also said I would await the hearings to learn more about her judicial philosophy. Based on what we now know about Miss Miers, it appears that we would not have been able to support her candidacy. Thankfully, that difficult evaluation is no longer necessary."

Me too, Dr. D. That's what caused me to hop off the bandwagon.

Why am I not surprised that Dr. Dobson is a target to you?

Do you?

Sure. Which mistake of mine did you have in mind?

I have no problem with Dr. Dobson's position. I was against Miers at first, then for her, then finally when that speech from 1993 came out, totally and completely against her.

Sorry for not being a closed-minded stooge.

"Why am I not surprised that Dr. Dobson is a target to you?"

I don't know why you're not surprised.

Dr. Dobson assured everyone that he had double secret info on Miers and that she'd be just fine. Now that she's withdrawn, he has double secret info that she's not.

My question for Dr. Dobson is: Why did you give that assurance before you knew anything about her? You were blowing smoke up your followers' legs.

Wait a minute...Dr. Dobson was doing exactly what most of the Pro-Miers folks wanted: While many conservative pundits publicly opposed the nominee, Dr. Dobson afforded her time for more of her record to come out. The 1993 speech seemed to be the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. You can't logically argue for "more time" for her record to come to light and then slam a person who becomes convinced that that very same record is an ill omen.

This seems to confirm the rumor Dobson phoned the W.H. yesterday saying he'd go public with dissent if she remained.

It had been noticeable he'd grown quiet in the last couple of weeks with his support.

There goes the theory Christains, who were never united behind her anyway, are going to exact retribution.

Am I missing something here or does Dobson think Bush could have done something other than accept Mier's withdrawal? Could he force her to continue?

Yes and I defiantly want an explanation as to why it was floated as a given that she is pro-life now.

Was there a reason for that or was everyone including her lying ?

Did Mineral Man say something that was not categorically true?

I have nothing against Dobson but for some reason he, Bauer, Robertson, have just been LAME on SCOTUS nominees.

They either mindlessly repeat the party line or make silly, unsupported statement they later disavow.

No one should pay any attention to what they say about SCOTUS nominees.

Dobson shot his mouth off and was going to be called in front of the Senate.

I'm wondering if this is one of the reasons Miers withdrew...she didn't want to see the hearings become a carnival of christian baiting.

Dobson is OK with the family psychology but he does get too bit for his britches.
