Spill Forces Garden City Hotel Evacuation

GARDEN CITY, Long Island The New York Rangers were forced to evacuate their Long Island hotel, just hours before their 5-4 loss to the rival New York Islanders, when a man wearing a surgical mask dumped a chemical on the lobby floor and then drove away.

The man has been identified as former Garden City Hotel employee Scott Wallace, who's 23. Nassau County Police say Wallace entered the hotel about 3 p-m and deliberately spilled the chemical on the floor of the rotunda area and then fled.

The chemical later was found to be harmless, and no one was injured.

A hazardous-materials unit and a mobile laboratory were sent to the hotel to test the chemical, which smelled strongly like ammonia. More than 200 hotel workers and guests including the Rangers were temporarily forced out.

Wallace was arrested several hours later. The charges against him hadn't been determined, pending a consultation with the district attorney's office.

Police say preliminary testing showed the substance was not a health risk.

Just curious...Why were the NY Rangers staying in a hotel if they were playing in NYC? Did they fly from JFK to LaGuardia, too?

I didn't even think about that. Maybe there was some receptive party for them?

This has been being reported since yesterday on the radio. This morning was the first news in print (well, virtual print).

No one has made any reference to why the Rangers were in Long Island.

Wow, I remember when Ranger fans threw dead fish on the ice at the Islanders! (the good old days)

Maybe, they are going to play the Islanders. Are you or have you come from the area? You sure know the geography. I heard a blurb on the radio news last night about this. I'm glad that's all it was about.
