Raise of minimum wage to $6.25 defeated
The Chicago Sun-Times ^ | 10/20/2005 | Jim Abrams

WASHINGTON -- Senate proposals to raise the minimum wage were rejected Wednesday, making it unlikely that the lowest allowable wage, $5.15 an hour since 1997, will rise in the foreseeable future.

A labor-backed measure by Sen. Edward Kennedy would have raised the minimum to $6.25 over an 18-month period.

"If someone doesn't have the skills to earn more than minimum wage, they have no business having children. Nobody's entitled to a certain income just because they have a family to support."

Just another example of very calloused, bigoted thinking.

he pointed out that a single parent with two children working a minimum wage earns $10,700 a year, $4,500 below the poverty line.

Where does the (un)Earned Income Tax, TANF payments, paid daycare, subsidized housing, utility assistance, free health care come into play in this kennedy scenario?

Do you REALLY think that I should pay for these low lifes to have children. It DOES NOT say that in my copy of the US or Missouri Constitution. They do not have the right to have children for me to raise.

Minimum wage should be doubled to 10 bucks an hour. Kinda pathetic, that they coudn't even get themselves to increase it by one dollar.

Ever try to live on $10 an hour? It's damn hard.

I think it should be $20-$25. Somewhere in that range.

And if the min wage were increased to $100.00/hr, you still couldn't support a family on it...JFK

"these low lifes"

Why do you assume that only "lowlifes" have minimum wage jobs?
And who said anything about you paying for them to have children? We're talking about making a decent wage to live on.

Following yours and others logic only degreed, highwage earners should have children.

Like I said calloused bigoted thinking.

Hardly. The cost of goods and services would increase exponentially accross the entire economy, causing the value of a $100 bill to become the equivalent of what a $5 bill is today. Actions have consequences. What makes you think that minimum wage laws have none?...JFK

Only for druggies and high school dropouts. Graduates should start at 30.00 an hour.

Of course, we would have to pay 5.00 or 6.00 for a hamburger at MacDonalds, but what the heck?

NO, if you had your way and gave everyone 50000 a year to sweep floors, then WTF do you think prices would be to buy consumeer goods. If a hamb has 50 cents in labor costs and you increase it to a dollar then the price would have to be increased accordingly.

Anyone of average intelligence can work hard and get an education and therefore a decent job. Nobody gave me a thing, I worked in the family business from 5 AM to school start then back until 7 or 8 that night. Worked in popcorn booth at the local theater on weekends and this staarted when I was only 10 years old. I went to College by working summers, not buying a car or drugs, working 5PM to 1AM 5 days a week during school. Then joined the Army and finished college after I got out (on the GI Bill). During the last of underegrad school, I was married with children and still finished SO DON'T pretend that that aren't opportunities out there to improve one's lot in life.

Cheering across the board??? There is a very bad downside to all this. Minimum income people are most likely eligible for food stamps, Medicaid, low income housing, on and on.

We all know who picks up the tab for all of those give away programs.

Fact of life, we pay up front at Burger King or we have money taken from us by government. Poverty or low wages indeed breeds bigger government from both parties.

Who do you think will pay for these additional labor costs, Bill Gates, Ted Turner, Ophra Winfrey? Who? I'll tell you, ME and every person buying goods and services.

Oh so once upon a time YOU were one of those lowlife minimum wage workers. Guess you think those lowlifes should start at the top like you did. This pointless you have your opinion and I have mine. Yours is shall we say less than admirable.

Minimum wage is entry/training level pay. As more skills are accquired pay level tends to go up accordingly. Of course, hell, I'll pay a rent-a-drunk $8 an hour just to stand behind me with a broom and bring me tools and materials. If I hire a tile setter with skills, I might pay him 3 times that or more. But I don't need a helper or another setter every day.

If you still make Minimum Wage after a few months on the job, I suggest you FIND ANOTHER JOB! You're in a dead end anyway.

True, some min. wage earners will remain at that level, but many others will seek better-paying jobs, and the taxpayers won't have to pay for them.

Why make up things? I DID NOT SAY THAT I STARTED AT THE TOP, I said that I earned great wages by WORKING for them, getting an education etc. I had kids when I could afford them, not when the gov't would give me the money. Yes, I make over 50,000 a year on retirement but nobody said that I should make 90,000 because I had children or grandchildren so I needed that much more. Dead end jobs, minimum wage jobs are only there as an entry level job until THE INDIVIDUAL learns more skills, gains a higher level of education etc.
