RALEIGH, N.C. - A U.S. Army deserter who spent decades in North Korea says his communist keepers abused him and controlled every aspect of his life, down to telling him how often to have sex.

"It was the worst mistake anyone ever made," Charles Jenkins said. "In words, I cannot express the feelings I have towards North Korea, the harassment I got, the hard life."

In an interview airing Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes, Jenkins said he was given no painkillers when a tattoo on his forearm that read "U.S. Army" was cut off with a scalpel and scissors.

Quick, someone call Ramsey Clark, Robert Scheer, Noam Chomsky, Ward Churchill, Cindy Sheehan, and "International ANSWER"...... it seems that the "workers' paradise" is not quite the utopia that's been promised.....

From everything I have read, he was more of a coward than a traitor. Ending up stuck in North Korea all those years was probably worse punishment than he ever would have ever gotten for desertion. Now I just wish he would shut up and move to Japan with his wife (who was truly an innocent victim of the North Koreans).

Somehow feelings of sympathy currently escape me. I'll try again later but I don't expect much luck

Forty years in a North Korean gulag- that's punishment enough IMHO. The gentleman has apparently learned his lesson.

We need to trumpet his story from every soapbox. If he writes a biography, it should be required reading for students.
(I had to read both "Animal Farm" and "1984" in school. I had a couple of conservative teachers, thank God!)

BTW, I wonder if Hollywood is trying to buy his story. . . or not?

You know being stupid has some pretty nasty consequences. He is lucky that it wasn't fatal.

"U.S. ARMY DESERTER DESCRIBES 40 YEARS IN NORTH KOREA HELL"

Evidently he didn't read the fine print in the N. Korean travel brochure.

OhMyGoodness, and sorry, all my pity was all used up, on all my friends and relatives, who stood fast, and died, while this pissant was selling out, and making sure he had a convenient source of sex!
If y'all appoint me as hangman, just make damned sure you have enough rope!

When I went to Bishop England High School, Charleston, SC, either one or the other of those books were required reading.
