Monday afternoon's Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee luncheon at the Grand Hyatt in Manhattan was supposed to boost Fernando Ferrer's faltering campaign to unseat New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg.
But according to the New York Post, Ferrer's appearance was just window dressing compared to the real star of the show - Hillary Clinton - who was feted by the city's Democratic Party elite as the next president of the United States.
"She is already the Democratic front-runner for the presidency in 2008," declared Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields while introducing Clinton.
New York State gubernatorial hopeful Eliot Spitzer positively gushed over the former first lady, suggesting she was the "Babe Ruth" of female leaders.
Noting that Hillary was inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame last week, Spitzer mused:
"It struck me as a little bit premature, don't you think? It sounded like having Babe Ruth inducted [into the Baseball Hall of Fame] when he only hit 400 home runs, not 714."
"Let's wait for the right moment," he continued. "There's still stuff ahead for Hillary Clinton, " Spitzer added — as thunderous applause broke out.
When Clinton took to the podium, her first remarks were directed - not a Ferrer's opponent - but at the Bush White House.
When she finally got around to mentioning the guest of honor, she praised him as the type of candidate who represented "Democratic values."
I can think of plenty of nicknames for the Hildabeast, but Babe Ruth sure as hell isn't one of them.
I just can't imagine people wanting to return to a "Clinton" White House and seeing Bill there again. I just can't.

I truly, truly, truly, am feeling sorry for Freddie Ferrer. He is the biggest loser, ever. It is such a shame for him.
She'll act like she's president for so long that buy Nov 2008 people will want a change!

The clintons always suck all the air out of the room and leave nothing for other Democrats to breathe.
That's one reason why a lot of Dems may not be all that keen to see her get the nomination. Whether they will dare to stop her is another matter.
