WASHINGTON - Stunned by conservative opposition to Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers, President Bush next week will bring in former justices from her home state of Texas to trumpet her qualifications for the nation's highest court.
The event is part of an administration effort to refine its push for Miers after its initial strategy failed to quiet opposition from members of the president's own party.
The Republican critics, who suggest Bush passed over candidates with long records of conservative rulings from the bench, say that if the White House strategy continues to amount to a "trust me" message, they'll continue to grumble.
On Friday, press secretary Scott McClellan repeatedly used the words "qualified" and "well-qualified" to defend Miers and say she deserved a fair hearing from the Senate Judiciary Committee. Conservative opponents say emphasizing her resume is part of a new White House tack.
The White House has sought to dampen opposition from the GOP's right flank by noting that Miers attended an evangelical church in Texas that is almost universally anti-abortion. Earlier this week, the president spoke of how religion is part of her life.

That's because your priorites are screwed up.
The baseball playoffs are more important than wasting time on a SC nominee who is going to get her hearing.

>>When is George, Dick, Ken, Karl, and Eddy G <<
Is using the singular form of the verb, "to be" on purpose?
"Why, I've got half a mind...!"
Random Thoughts
Not a good selling job by the White House if they keep bringing up litmus tests, anathema to conservatives.
President H. W. Bush in his own words, "Read our lips; Souter's a reliable conservative." [Corollary of RML]
Good move WH.
She could easily be confirmed in the Senate by Thanksgiving.
FWIW, Hecht wrote an opinion in the TX Parental Notification Case that shows good judicial restraint. If she had the same inclination in that regard as he does, it's a net plus on my personal tally sheet. FWIW.
It seems weird to have to ask the judges for their endorsement - are there any ethical issues involved here?
Sorry, George - it's going to take a lot more than "trust me" or "trust these guys" from the man who stomped on the First Amendment and blew spending all to hell after campaigning for "limited government".
See what I mean. It is just not your nature to be civil and or polite. WE ALL know that deep inside you know Bush erred, you just cannot admit it to all your friends here on FR.
You are forgiven.
They are worried about a recess appointment;)
Another thing probably worth noting. The hearings aren't limited to her testimony. There will be other witnesses who will be called. This was how Anita Hill got involved with Clarence Thomas' hearings.
So . . . yes, Specter probably needs to move this show up a week to week after next. I think it starts with other witnesses, like her colleagues, to testify to her abilities. Then they bring her in and try to extract statements about Roe v Wade. She dodges all those, as all nominees do, then there is a committee vote. She'll pass and be forwarded to the floor.
To be on schedule to finish by Tday, this has to move fast.
Don't get me wrong. The question is rhetorical. The point is that Meirs is not the judge Bush promised us. And he better realize this real soon and put an end to this. She should withdraw immediately. And Bush should have a Rogers Brown caliber appointment ready that same day.
All New! Improved! Miers Lobbying Strategy! Now With Extra Assurances! Less Strong-arming! Same Great Taste!!!!
Nice to know the administration is going to meet to plot how to force this nomination down our throats and make us like it. I'd hate to see them instead strategizing on how to strongarm RINO's and Dems into supporting an exceptional mind, accomplished, with a solid known Philosophy. What a waste of time that would be.
Unless they have several heavy folders of Meir's Judicial philosophy and commentary by her on the text of the Constitution, I'm not interested.
I think he handled himself very well considering the circumstances. Hume did his usual professional job. No overt signs, but yeah, I got the same feeling based on which questions were not answered directly, as well as the substance of the answers.
I'm glad Cheney is there. If anybody can figure out a decent way to extract us from this mess, he's the go-to guy. I do credit GWB for bringing Cheney on as VP. Smart move.
Where are the Bushbots????? I suspect Sink has them organized in a protest not to post on Miers.
Lockstep pubs here should have watched him.
In all fairness, we each see what our prejudices demand, sometimes. The impression in their view will be much different from mine. I do agree with you though. Lots of signals. Face was not aglow and smiley. He knows something is afoot, and it troubles him.
I agree. Is that a Texas version of "withdraw"?
