Thousands of people have been abducted by the war-torn republic's kidnapping machine. Tales of the survivors read like relics from a barbaric past.

NALCHIK, Russia--As awkwardly as a newborn foal struggling on spindly legs, Lena Meshcheryakova is learning how to curl her lips up at the corners to make a smile.

"She was a pitiful sight, all covered in scabies, her skin hanging loose. She had deep bedsores and could barely move. She weighed 9 kilograms [20 pounds] at 3 years of age." .....Lena's ear was ripped, and she had a deep scar on her finger. "Larisa hit me with a knife for losing a slipper," Lena explained to her mother....When her mother asked why she was always sitting with hands behind her back, Lena told her she was wearing handcuffs. She would greedily pounce on any crumbs that fell to the floor and lick the last tiny scrap from her plate.

Who does this -- to a 3 yr old baby???? Calling them animals is too good. Annihilation, that's the only solution.

Pretty shocking stuff, though hardly surprising given what we've seen of Beslan, the theater siege, and so on. The one thing that always gets me about Chechnya is that at one level, especially at the start of it in the early 90s (when I became aware of the separaratist movement there) I actaully *sympathize* with the goal of an independent Chechnya *in theory*. Afterall it is a genuine ethnic nation, invaded, occupied, ground down, and annexed by Mother Russia and has generally been pissed on from on high ever since.

Unfortunately the Chechens have adopted the poisonous cancer or Arab (well, Islamic) Nationalism as justification for their cause, so in weighing up what I view as two evils - occupation by Russia vs. establisment of a Jihadist state - the formed wins hands down.

I believe that in Russia as it is - essentially a semi-capitalist dictatorship masquerading as a democracy - it may well be neccessary in some cases to use armed resistance to be heard and to have any control over your destiny whatsoever. It is just that the Chechen tactics are the worst possible example of how to try to convince the world you are "freedom fighters"...

OK...religion of peace?

Animals who follow the doctrine of demons. Slavery is still alive and well in the wonderful world of Islam. Ignore the cries of "not me" by so-called moderates and finally give these subhumans the religious war they crave. Europeans never really fought the crusades right and now is the time to finish the job. Let not a muslim man, woman or child draw breath 'lest the contagion reignite and spread. Islam is a disease.

Problem is, slavery is what drove Russia into Chechenya. The Chechens were raiding Russian settlements to the north and in Ossetia and in Russian Georgia and selling the human cargo to Turkey, Persia and Khiva. It's the only real industry that shiete hole has.

Interesting... wouldn't surprise me at all. Although in fairness, I'm not sure the Russians (under the Tsar I imagine when they invaded, not that the Bolsheviks would have been any better) would have given a squirty Chechen crap for whether they were slavers or not. More likely it was part of the power struggle with the Ottomans...

Actually, by the time that Chechnya was taken, the Ottomans had already been pushed back. The reason that Khiva (Uzebekistan) and much of central asia was taken was a continued fight with islamic slavery which then turned into the White Man's Burden.
