White People Won't Vote for Blacks, Congressman Charges

(1st Add: Includes details about Voting Rights Act)

(CNSNews.com) - The chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus on Friday urged his Capitol Hill colleagues to extend and strengthen the Voting Rights Act in order to "level the playing field" because, U.S. Rep. Melvin Watt said, "white people ... will not consider voting for an African American candidate."

Watt, a Democrat from North Carolina, made the remarks at a Washington hearing held by the National Commission on the Voting Rights Act. The commission, a project of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, is conducting nationwide hearings to gather data on voter discrimination for a report it will issue supporting the extension of the Voting Rights Act.

Watt told Cybercast News Service that his views are based on a 1980s blind poll of North Carolinians, which he said revealed that 30 percent of whites would not vote for a black candidate under any circumstances.

Watt told the commission that if another poll were conducted today, "there would be a substantial majority of white voters who would say that under no circumstances would they vote for an African American candidate." He later amended his comments, allowing that "some of them would."

Let me clarify:

White Democrats won't vote for a Black Democrat...but White Republicans will vote for a Black Republican.

True. I voted for Allen Keyes during a primary.

Apologies, I looked at the wrong number. His district is 64.4 percent white.

I wanted to vote for Alan Keys. I guess some don't vote for liberal race baiting blacks.

I'll vote for anyone who is in favor of small government and lower taxes, regardless of how they look. The problem Mr. Watts is that you are in favor of large government with lots of hand outs. That is why I will not vote for you.

You both gave me the same answer. At first, i thought one of you was joshing me (about 1 black vote counting for 2 or 3 votes). But when the other of you said the same thing i got the picture you may not be kidding.

What a total crock! Has the Congressman ever heard of Ken Blackwell, OH Sec'y of State or J.C. Watts.

How about every black mayor in every major city - whites vote for them even when they happen to be totally incompetent (usually Dims voting for a Dim.)

Add to that list Gary Franks from Connecticut. He ran against a white, liberal incumbent Democrat, Toby Moffett, and won.

A district was created for him in a predominantly black area. I'm not a racist, but this is why he was elected.

Translation: Put all the whites in the state in one congressional district and split the rest among the black population of the state. (Actually gerymander to make black majority districts as much as possible.)

Watt is a dim bulb. Real Americans vote for who they want to. What sort of PC fascism is Watt sugggestig? That Caucasian votes be negated? He is a race racketeer of the worst sort. Even "The Graft Zeppelin", Al Sharpton, never publicly spewed that much horse patootie!

Mel Watt is such an idiot. The only reason he keeps getting re-elected is because the Democrats in the state legislature gerrymandered a congressional district for him.

Personally, I'd vote for Colin Powell if he would run, Condoleeza Rice, J.C Watts, and locally, I did vote for a Winston-Salem city councilman named Vernon Robinson who ran against Virginia Foxx last year for the 5th district.

I'll vote for him again if he runs against her next year.

My father-in-law would never vote for a black or a hispanic candidate, but then everyone who knows him thinks he's weird. That's just the tip of the iceberg and therefore we have very little contact with him.
My husband and I would vote for the person we thought would be best for the job, race wouldn't matter.

And how much support did Alan Keyes get from the black community when he ran for senate in Illinois?

The lack of Keyes votes didn't have anything to do with his race but more the fact that no one knew for sure which state that carpetbagger was running in at the time. I think next time Alan just ought to register to run in a few states at a time for different offices. Whichever state gets him (if the citizens of that state are stupid enough to elect him) will be stuck with him for life.

Of course that means the citizens of Flora, IL may end up with the looniest dog catcher anyone's ever had for life.

I won't vote for Cynthia McKinney either, but it has NOTHING to do with her race.

But isn't gerymandering one of the Democrats main complaints of Tom Delay?

this bozo should come to Texas - yes Texas -where the Mayor of Dallas was a Black Democrat...who was loved by republicans. The love affair died when he proved to be ineffective - all hat no cattle.
