Asian Quake May Be Serious Blow To Islamic Groups Hostile to U.S.

The massive earthquake that tore through the Kashmir region of Pakistan and India appears to have been especially costly for battle-hardened Islamist extremists hostile to the U.S.

Radical groups are beginning to acknowledge heavy casualties from the 7.6-magnitude temblor. Meanwhile, U.S. aid arriving in a mountainous corner of Pakistan has marked the start of what U.S. officials hope is a significant role in the area's reconstruction -- one they hope will help to improve America's image in the Muslim world.

Several militant groups in the Pakistani-controlled area of Kashmir, the quake's epicenter, appear to have lost hundreds of fighters in the disaster, according to a representative of the largest militant group, Lashkar-e-Taiba, or LeT. LeT itself had more than 100 deaths, including 40 pupils in an Islamic seminary who perished when a building collapsed in Muzaffarabad, the capital of the Pakistani-controlled part of Kashmir.
