The center of Naltchik was encircled by the police force and of the cars provided with loudspeakers invited the inhabitants to evacuate the district, declared a person in charge for the regional administration, under cover of anonymity.
The school is behind a police station, from where a smoke of fire rose.
According to the Interfax agency quoting of the police sources, of the armed men the police station and several other buildings attacked. And of the engagements were held in several districts of the city.

NALCHIK, October 13 (RIA Novosti)-Two militants have been killed and one policemen wounded in a gun battle in the North Caucasus city of Nalchik, a source in the local law-enforcement agencies said Thursday.
The gun battle is continuing in a suburb of the city, which is the capital of the republic of Kabardino-Balkariya.
According to the source, an anonymous caller phoned the police on Thursday morning and said that there were armed people in the suburb.
"After arriving at the scene, the police were ambushed and shot at by unknown assailants," the source said, adding that there were about 10 militants involved in the gun battle.

The city has been surrounded by federal forces, the source said. The situation in the city is critical, he said.
Another Interfax source within the republic's law enforcement and security agencies confirmed that a battle is currently underway in the city.
A law enforcement source earlier said that the gunmen launched the attack after security forces detained a group of Wahhabites, whom their supporters are currently trying to release. Battles are also currently underway near city police department No. 1 and throughout the city. Some information indicates that city police department No. 2, a road police department and a prison have also been attacked.
The Kabardino-Balkarian presidential office confirmed that the headquarters of a number of law enforcement and security agencies have been attacked.
Machine-gun fire and explosions are being heard around the city.
