China warns Canada on Taiwan trade bill

OTTAWA (AP) - China's ambassador to Canada warned Wednesday that a bill before Parliament calling for formal trade and cultural ties with Taiwan could destroy the foundations beneath 35 years of diplomatic ties between Ottawa and Beijing.

Ambassador Lu Shumin said there would be serious "consequences" if the measure introduced by British Columbia Conservative Jim Abbott were passed. Though the measure is considered unlikely to become law, the issue is creating tensions as Canada and China move toward building much stronger trade ties.

The bill calls on Canada to establish formal trade and cultural ties with Taiwan, which established formal relations with Ottawa 35 years ago this month.

Historically, the island of Taiwan was part of China. But it has been a separate territory since the Nationalist government was driven off the mainland by the communists in 1949. The Beijing government considers Taiwan part of its territory.

Canada has repeatedly pronounced its support for Beijing's one-China policy, which maintains that Taiwan is an integral part of the Asian giant.

He would not elaborate on what those consequences might be.

Two-way trade between Canada and China has skyrocketed in recent years.

Of course Canada will quickly back down under pressure. After all, Beijing isn't Washington and according to Canada's mind they don't want to offend the future master of the world (they seriously believe in this stuff).

A Chinese saying perfectly fits Canada: it bullies a meek, but chickens out when a bully comes.

You must have spent a tremendous amount of time in Canada or at least near our northern border that you can substantiate these generalizations.

LOL. Are you referring to the US as the meek? We've been called a lot but I've never heard meek in that context. Or, if not, which other country is Canada bullying?

Reading your various posts I can think of a saying, too, this one in Latin: si tacuisses philosophus mansisses.
