I think we're seeing the car manufacturing market react to increased fixed ownership costs (ie gas costs) for their cars.
Or they are just making crappier cars. ;)

It takes at least 3-4 years to design and market a new model auto. There must have been some really crystal clear balls at GM, et al........

The lowest priced new cars this year will be suspiciously shipped from the gulf region and have an air freshener hanging from the mirror.

fixed ownership costs (ie gas costs) Gas purchase is a variable cost: you don't drive, you don't pay.

So my question is, how hard would one of these be to scrape off the bumper of my '88 Lincoln?

With a starting manufacturer's suggested retail price of less than $10,000, the 2006 Chevrolet Aveo is the lowest-priced new car in the United States. Low price doesn't mean skimping on safety equipment anymore; some lowest-priced new cars include six standard airbags. And at about $500 a pop, that adds up to $3,000 out of the price of the car. Gotta wonder about the rest of it when government airbag bombs are over 30% of the price of the car.
