San Jose police arrested 28-year-old Rodrigo Ortiz Paniagua as he sat outside the burning home smoking a cigarette. He was being held on suspicion of three homicides.
As investigators tried to figure out why Paniagua attacked his family, relatives of the slain woman said there had been earlier incidents of domestic violence.
Paniagua shared the home in the 3100 block of Pavan Drive with his 26-year-old girlfriend, who was several months pregnant, their two daughters, and the girlfriend's 15-year-old sister, police spokeswoman Gina Tepoorten said.
Relatives identified the slain woman as Leticia Chavez and said she was an administrator at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto. They said Paniagua is a former U.S. Marine who is unemployed. Their daughters were Adrina, 6, and Analisa, 3.
The incident was first reported as a house fire at 6:20 a.m., but responding firefighters quickly realized something was amiss when they found the teen outside the home tending to Adrina, who was suffering from multiple stab wounds and burns.
Adrina later died, and firefighters who entered the home found the bodies of Chavez and Analisa. Police said they did not know if the teen was at home at the time of the killings and fire -- or whether she had just returned home.
Police arrested Paniagua without incident outside of the single-story home in the Evergreen neighborhood of East San Jose.
John Stallworth, a next-door neighbor who had befriended Paniagua, said the suspect seemed to be a model father.

He snapped big time. Lord, how could you snap that bad that you'd kill your family? Here's hoping he pleads guilty and gets what he deserves.
Yep, model father. Knocks up the woman TWICE, doesn't marry her, history of domestic violence and then kills the entire family.
Sounds like a model father to me.
May all the judges who ignore domestic violence read this and weep.
That seems to be in direct contravention of the provisions of Conor's Law.
He committed four homicides.
Good point. A model father is generally married to his children's mother.
"paniagua" = pan y agua = bread and water. More than he deserves.
Not so in today's oh so "tolerant" culture. Don't ya know that marriage is just a little slip of unnecessary paper? (/sarcasm)
Multiculturalism is wonderful!
I was the cops I'd also be looking into the next door neighbor's life a bit...given his assessment..
Three times!

No mention of what happened to the 15 year old.
I believe she was the person found stabbed outside of the house. She died in a local hospital.
"No mention of what happened to the 15 year old."
She was tending one the daughters who had been stabbed at the time of the fire so presumably she is fine.
Time to send Daddy to a visit with his family.
So true, but only for hetrosexuals. Gay couples are screaming for them!
Good example of why a woman shold leave a man the first time he raises his hand to her. It never gets better and eventually he'll go after the kids, too!
No; fathers, with their wife, create a family, and raise children.
Sires create unwanted by-products of f***ing, then blame their female f***ing partner for "ruining his life' by getting herself pregnant", as if he had nothing to do with it. After a couple of times of this, what's a "man" to do? After all, it isn't as if his partner & kids are 'people'....
"Dirty minded me", I also can't help wondering what, if anything, he was trying to cover up with the fire?
That was sarcasm.....
Cool Hand Paniagua
I hope he enjoys his new prison moniker.
wife beating/killing, child killing, no good, piece of dog poop.
Yes, it was, and a good job of it too.
But it seemed like the best spot to stick an equally pithy reply.
Sorry if it sounded like criticism of yours.
