Papa Do Preach (Bono shares his thoughts about the United States with NYC crowd)
NY Post ^ | October 10, 2005 -- | Dan Aquilante

SOME performers say they love New York, but U2's 25-year affair with the city couldn't be expressed better than at their Madison Square Garden Vertigo Tour opener, played with panting passion that was returned kiss for kiss by the sold-out house.

The performance on Friday was the kind of show that makes it easy to answer anybody who asks, "What was the best concert of the year?" This was it — hands down and no question.

During the two-hour gig, Bono was chatty and even reminisced about when he first came to New York at age 19. He half-joked, "That's when the megalomania began." At past New York concerts, Bono has used the stage as a pulpit with sledgehammer suavility. But Friday, he made amends saying, "Thanks for listening to me. I know I can be a pain in the ass."

During "Sunday Bloody Sunday" he requested "The Stars and Stripes Forever." He treated the flag respectfully and later praised the men and women in the U.S. military. He observed about the United States: "It is in the worst of times that this country finds the best of America . . . America is a powerful idea, it belongs to the world."

On the list of unbearable liberal humps, Bono is amongst the least unbearable. A bit of a misguided socialist, but a decent fellow.

I still have no use for his music though.

Just the reverse for me: I love his music, but have no use for his politics.

Seems like he's trying to cover for anti-American comments he made recently at another concert.

He is a leftist, but at least shows respect. He's even been fairly respectful towards President Bush.

The early U2 albums were good, they even rallied against those groups that were deemed commercial bands. Then they did the worst thing possible...they became commercial whores themselves, just like REM. Then suddenly...they were the mouth piece of the entire industry. Pffffffttt!

Agreed. He's friends with Jesse Helms, on good terms with President Bush, and supposedly has a clue in policy conversations.

Some of his early music is pretty good and "Angel of Harlem" is brilliant.

His music tends to be the same thing over and over. Kinda dull. But he's a pretty decent guy as far as musicians go. But he has done alot of good work and is and was not afraid to praise GWB about Aid to Africa.

"Unfortunately U2 can't be with us here today, as BONO is in the Holy Land curing lepers with his touch." Host JONATHAN ROSS mocks Bono's charity work.

more and more people seem to be bashing Bono.

You joke, but believe me, he'll get a Nobel Peace Prize before he kicks the bucket (whatever THOSE things mean these days).

You're right. Angel of Harlem is a great tune. They have a couple really great tunes over the last 25 years, but a majority of their songs are overblown and pretentious. Just not my style.

When I need some Irish rock and roll, I'll take The Saw Doctors anyday. Or The Waterboys. Or some old Thin Lizzy.

He knows you get more flies with honey. President Bush takes his phone calls. That wouldn't happen if he acted like Michael Moore. That's just being smart.

I believe he and Pres. Bush worked together recently on an initiative to promote business in Africa rather than handouts.

I think Bono might be starting to get it.

It's objective acts of reason and understanding like this that cost Bono the Noble Peace Prize.

Here's my favorite (yes, it's repetitive, but so was the original) --

MIDI - WITH OR WITHOUT YOU

He's so liberal he's scary...that sums up John F. Kerry
No Effin way

He has made bad decisions...what he's done is sedition
He's a clone of Teddy...without the dead girl...without the dead girl

He is daily flip-flopping...there seems to be no stopping
Ted, without...the dead girl
Without the dead girl...without the poor dead girl

He is Ted...without the dead girl

We have all had quite our fill of his baloney...we can so easily tell that he's a phony
We have all had quite our fill...had our fill...we have all had quite our fill of his baloney
Watch him tax and spend...it will never end...watch him tax and spend...it will never end

Look at him, ask yourself...could you vote for Kerry...who could vote for scum like Kerry
Are they nuts...that nuts...are they nuts...that nuts
That they would cast their vote for Kerry

He is Ted, without the dead girl...Teddy, without the poor dead girl
Oh, yes, John is Ted...Teddy, without the dead girl

Look at what he does...it's tax and spend...it never ends
Teddy without...the dead girl

He is Ted, without the dead girl...John is Ted without the poor dead girl
Oh, yes, he is Ted, but without the poor dead girl...but without the poor dead girl

With...out the dead girl...with...out the dead girl

Come on, don't be a jerk...open your eyes and watch him work
If you are suckered by a lie...then John F. Kerry is your guy
For power he will always whore...he's hurt us in the terror war....he sucks

Have only been a nominal fan of his, not because of his politics, but I because I usually got distracted by other favorites when it came time to choosing favorite music. However, every song I have heard from him I have enjoyed.

Im willing to cut the guy some slack, and think others should to. I am perfectly willing to live with someone who has socialist ideas about how government should be run, but is still respectful of people in a country that has given him such capitalistic wealth and freedom. He appears to know where his gravy comes from and is sincerely considerate of it. I would be willing to support his (midsguided) views on government because he recogizes that he shares the same purpose of freedom as those with a conservative view. People who are like this are usually very kind and generous people in their own right and should never be scoffed.

We conservatives do a disservice to proponents of freedom when we throw bitterness at people like Bono.

What is this "Bono" thing you speak of?

(Asked by a person with 37.6 gigs of MP3's on his external hard drive)
