My sympathies for those who weren't consulted by the President of the United States as to whom he ought to choose to sit on the Court.
ROTFLOL!
They were only "elite" in the achievements, not in the breeding or background. They were lawyers and merchants. Farmers and soldiers. They were in the positions they were in because they had the guts and the lung power to stand up and take a stand, at the risk to "their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor." And the word 'fortunes' does not mean they were all wealthy men. Instead it is in the sense of their well being.
Harriet Miers may have achieved more than Robert Bork, despite his academic credintials, by breaking down barriers in the profession that Bork served in. I think she is every bit as qualified as he is, and doesn't carry any of the arrogance and unfounded feelings of superiority that the self appointed intelligentsia have brought to the court. All of the current members of the court are "qualified" in the same sense Robert Bork is.
Right or left, the overeducated academics are the source of the problems we face with an over reaching court. I'm becoming convinced that Harriet Miers is the perfect pick precisely because she does discomfort those crying about her "lack of qualifications."
I concur. I will watch the hearing with keen interest.
For the last 5 years, Bush's enemy's have underestimated him. In this selection, Bush overestimated the power of his enemies.
I'm not sure even Monica Lewinsky set off this much furor when she said "yes".
Oh, no. The majority of the critics of this nomination, including some here on FR (and you know they're here), don't have the brainpower to even pretend to be 'elite.' They are, instead, the angry mob, being led by their torch bearing betters, ready to drag Harriet Miers down by any means necessary. Mobs are like that. Give them a good slogan to shout and they'll follow anywhere, regardless of the lack of evidence to support the slogan.
Buchannanites, Perotistas and the like. This has the stench of a lynching. I think Justice Thomas would recognize the mob gathering against Harriet Miers.
The "elite" in question are the pontificating class, including the "I'm smarter than everyone else" types like Bork, Kristol and Buchannen. There may be lots of reasons to oppose this nomination, but so far it's primarily mobs being led by elites who are complaining that THEY weren't consulted.
Outstanding post.
Try DU, they love Bush bashers over there.
We just had an obvious islamic terrorist blow himself up a few yards away from 80000 people in Norman Oklahoma. But it didn't happen in NY or DC or LA, so it just didn't happen.
Miers is from SMU, so when "conservative" critics say "she came out of nowhere", obviously its SMU that they believe is nowhere.
I'm from Oklahoma, and I've seen this elitism all my life. Most of it in LA where I spent some years, but I still see it here in Phoenix. Places like Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas etc are "nowhere" unless a particular political candidate comes out of the region. And even those folks have to have diplomas from Harvard or Yale or somewhere else that's not "nowhere".
Opposition is primarily being led by the conservative masses who simply want a judge with a documented history of conservative judicial thought.
The "elitism" charge is a straw man, and a malicious smear.
These tantrums surpassed the pre schoolers.
However, I would support him for President in a heartbeat.
Newbie......keep stirring the pot.
Very True.
Maybe you ought to look in the wayback machine (not that a month is wayback) and read the posts on Roberts. He was roasted by some for not having a solid Conservative bonafides here on a FR. The answer from the BushBots... paraphrased.
"Just let it slide because HizMisundestimatedBushness is surely setting up a rope-a-dope Texas holdem' poker style strategery for the next nominee who will be a Conservative. ".
I'm sick of the handwaving koolaide swallowing neverending FR BUSH sycophants whom apparently wakes up with a brand new scrubbed version of history every morning; a mechanism of denial previously ascribed to liberals.
And if you can't remember the posts a month ago then there's no way you're going to remember the NUMBER ONE arguments pounded out every election cycle since 2000. "Vote Republican, we need Conservative judges on the Supreme Court"
My answer. Screw Bush! I'm sorry I voted for his lying ass.
