Very interesting. Do you know if Pipes, or any other authority, has written on the practice of homosexuality within the Arab culture?

Do you mean prostitutes or false marriages?

Is there a difference?

This isn't a Muslim issue. It's an Arab one. Reforming Islam wouldn't change this. They're getting one sick, backwards culture confused with another.

Why the Arab culture? Is it a combination of Islam and money that wasn't earned? ( They have an unworkable culture that normally would produce typical third world poverty, but because of Western science and ethics they're sitting on a fortunes. And that combination makes them sick?)

Good point. However, prostitution is generally considered to be a chosen "career" while being married off by your parents at the age of 13 is not by choice.

Oh I agree with you there.

I was poking fun at the way marriage seems to work out in our society. Women marry wealthy men, spend their money, contribute nothing to the home, the business, or the lifestyle except for sex, and in return they get a large settlement in a divorce after only a few years of marriage.

My father is getting divorced from his mistake right now, and while the divorce is final, the settlement of the marital property isn't complete. The woman never had to cook, clean, or do much of anything except spend money. She's now going to walk away with a sizable settlement that she earned on her back.. which smacks of prostitution.

Funny. I have thought some of those same thoughts recently. So sorry for your father. Not fair, at all.

Take heart in that money won't buy her happiness. I consider myself the richest woman in the world, not because I have money, but rather I have the best, loving husband in the whole world. No money needed.

Also, your father sounds like he will be happier without her, eh?

You sound very bitter about your father's choice of a marriage partner. Your father felt she was contributing - at least in the beginning.

I have been thinking along the lines of coconutt. I don't think it is bitter. It is reality and a good topic to discuss.

For example, why should a woman just kick back, hire maid service, join the country club, have her pedicures and manicures, shop at Nordstroms, etc. while living off her husband's hard-earned wages. Then walking off with half of her husband's income after a divorce. How fair is that? I'm not talking about the women who raise children, volunteer in hard working ways, cook, do accounting, remain a faithful partner, etc.

This could be either a woman or a man -- men could also stay home and play. You can blame the man/woman for marrying them but it doesn't make it fair.

E.g. Rush married Marta for ~10 yrs. If (yes, IF) she got 50% of his income (in some states) if, (again, IF) she didn't work. How fair is that? Why should any non-working spouse get half? Rush had his business long before Marta came along.

http://home.swipnet.se/islam/articles/Temp.Marriage.htm

(snip)

The chapters on "Temporary Marriage" in the book "Vassa'el" report that the Prophet posted an edict in the streets and bazaars which read: "O people! God's Apostle has made temporary marriage permissible for you, for the quenching of the fires of the sex instinct, and for turning it to sound uses, that ye may not be the slaves of sexual licence, fornication or illicit relationships." By this law the man and woman enter upon a marriage, not of permanence, but of a limited time, and live as man and wife until the expiry of the stated period. The only difference in this type of marriage is that it does not carry with it the same rights of inheritance, nor does the man have to continue to provide the woman's food, clothing and shelter after the termination of their relationship. But to preserve proper order all the other rules that govern permanent marriage must also be observed in the temporary marriage.

A woman who enters such a contract is counted as the man's real wife and can claim all the rights which are legally specified as such. As it is written in Sura IV. Nisa'a-"The Women" (verse 24): "To women whom you choose in temporary and conditional (muwaqat and muta'a) marriage, give their dowry, as a duty."

The only difference between permanent marriage and temporary marriage, so far as its social status is concerned, is its duration. If the contract specifies a definite and limited period, that is a temporary marriage. But the wife is as much a wife as if the contract had specified "a permanent and unlimited period." The children of the temporary marriage are recognised on precisely the same footing as those of a permanent marriage, and enjoy all the legal and canonical and customary rights of children whose paternity is recognised.

One reason for prostitution is that some men find it not within their reach to enter upon a permanent marriage, either because their personality or their finances prevent them undertaking the heavy lifelong responsibility. or because their stay in any one place can only be short. Merchants, soldiers, students and even tourists find themselves in these conditions. It is the realistic recognition of these facts, and Islam's consistent "yes!". to life, which have produced the institution of "temporary marriage".

What better solution could there be? Properly practised. this institution is a powerful antidote and preventative of ills like prostitution and other social ailments. It blocks the way to women's selling themselves, raises the general tone of public morality, and gives needed assistance to women who, through no fault of their own, either by the death of their husband or some other disaster, have fallen on bad times. We say "properly practised", because there are licentious and ignorant persons who abuse this law, including opponents of Islam who make misuse of it a basis for false propaganda and misrepresentation...blah blah blah and so forth...

Oh Muslims, this message is relayed to you by words and deeds of Muhammad (PBUH) who speaks for the great sky pimp Allah (SAW) do doth dwell in the great celestial whorehouse in the sky! Fear Allah (SAW) or he will dispenseth 72 raisins to you, and inshallah, you will not have nikah unless you can run faster than your camel!

Seriously, I even checked this one with our modern day the Imam and he's seems to agree, that Islam's consistent "yes!" to life includes the right for a man to demand sex from his "wife" and she has no right to refuse (like the slaves, and those "who your right hand possesses")!

I can only wonder what challenges the average Muslim male must face after he gets home from the local masjid on Friday evening if he ever gets all that "Allah destroy the enemies of Islam" stuff out of his head:

Lemme, see now... 4 wives... 72 virgins.... errm, thats 76, then theres those older ones I called "Talaaq" on three times in a row, Mufeeda, Sameera, wasser name the other one, and Ameena, the maid Rafidah; the slaves, Fareeda, Rafa and Haleema; the nine year old.... Hold on... I ran out of fingers and toes.. Time for another beer. Oops, I meant to say "praise Allah for giving us the kuffar to invent calculators."
