BAGHDAD -- Recent polling shows widespread support for a new Iraqi constitution to be voted on Oct. 15, even in strongholds of Sunni Arab groups that are fighting to derail the charter.

Mehdi Hafedh, director of the Iraqi Center for Development and International Dialogue, said his latest survey showed that Iraqis are exhausted by the continuing violence and that most are hoping the new constitution will be a first step toward the restoration of order.

More good news. After the last two months, we badly need some. Don't expect the MSM to publicize it, however.

Agreed. I was surprised though.

Not by the Washington Times, they're a pretty solid conservative paper.

The article came through the Reuters News Service.

They've all figured out that they can amend a constitution, but in the meantime they want to get it signed and over with. They're going to elect a permanent government in December and then they can fix whatever they think is wrong with it. It will be a real campaign issue.

It's fascinating to see it all unfolding. They seem to really want to make it work.

Yeah, they do. I've been reading Iraqi blogs since November 2003 and you'd be amazed at how seriously they are taking this. They have democracy classes and the people actually attend them at night after a hard days work. Whole villages will turn out to learn what democracy means and the responsibility that is involved in it.

Thanks for sharing that.

I've done some reading on it, but it's good to hear from someone else.

Their success can mean so much to the entire region.

Tom Daschle is saddened, deeply saddened.

BTW, don't hold your breath waiting for Katie Couric to report this in the morning.

If the Iraqis think this will decrease the violence, they are in for a rude awakening...
