ITHACA NY--Marriage may be next behind the dodo bird in the line of extinction. Government policies over the last decade have addressed growing numbers of out-of-wedlock mothers, leading a Cornell professor to study the issue.
Prof. David Lichter, policy analysis and management, has done numerous studies focusing on the issue of out-of-wedlock childbearing.
Marriage is a smoke screen to deflect public attention of governmental obligations such as providing jobs and fair wages, he said.
He added that he felt there was a trend for Republicans to view marriage as a solution rather than a problem of economic and emotional dependence.
The government has passed policies such as the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 in an attempt to encourage the formation and maintenance of two-parent families.
Lichter proposed a possibly more efficient, long term governmental policy solution: money may be better spent on promoting employment and educational opportunities for low-income men and women rather than merely on encouraging marriage. However, Lichter said that as of now, implementation of his proposals has not yet been well-received by the government and that President Bush was unreceptive to his suggestions when they met face to face.

That is the lib solution for every problem - throw more money at it. Responsible behavior is not even considered. Just let the government solve all your problems.
What will he do when Republicans take hold of government and accept his premise that government must wrest control and responsibility away from the private citizen? Imagine if this same professor were held to his own standard, except under Republican values? LOL! Clearly he thinks that we are free to do as we are told.
My sister was applying for financial aid. We learned that any woman who has a child before the age of 18, goes to college free.
Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. It is the individual's obligation to make himself marketable with skills that will get him those "fair" wages.
Socialist alert.
The author forgot to add: SOCIALISTS OF THE WORLD UNITE! BIG BROTHER IS YOUR DADDY!
So why do LIEberal Gays want it so bad?
And here I thought they were fashion trend setters!~}
The idea itself is nutty enough, but mentioning it to the President is about as nutty as they come. Like Bush would buy into this.
Can Cuba just annex Ithaca?
It's too early in the morning for this Bullshit* !
Fortunately, the nonsense is pushed up front where a lot of time can be saved by making a frisbee out of this article.
Might as well say that governmental "obligations" include providing, in addition to food, housing and health care, also plasma TVs, a Lexus and X-boxes to everyone. Let's call this the New Orleans Syndrome.
I have problems with the current expectations that the word "marriage" invokes but this is firmly into silly territory. If one is dysfunctional and neurotic marriage will not solve your problems. It may effectively mask them but they won't go away. If you are ignorant and lazy, marriage will not solve your problems. Neither will government.
I am grateful to the author for not forcing me to go through the rest of the article.
That phrase is right up there with other inanities like A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle or ...mimsy were the borogoves...
It's remarkable the stuff that can be placed in writing and made to appear sensical.
* Bullshit
Oh yeah. Six trillion$ thrown at the "war on poverty" since 1964 solved the problem right up! What's that definition of insanity again?
Didn't this "professor" ever even try to review what was done prior to the time he was born? Has anyone broken the news to him that the "new man" and Communism died about 26 years ago?
Gheeeez!
This type of BS is why Liberals continue to lose elections. The fact is that in 1950 4% of African American women had children out of wedlock. In NOLA that number is 80%. Danie Patrick Moniyhan wrote it was scandalous in 1965 at 24% and he predicted (former Democratic Senator from NY) that it would accelerate poverty, not cure it. He predicted the collapse of the Soviet Union also and was off by two years.
Now some dumb bell academic is suggesting more of the same failed policies. Wants to perpetuate the Government Cheese give away programs that have fostered dependence, collapse of Black Culture and permanent Government dependence. It makes you wonder what these geniuses will need to realize their ideas are not working? We have destroyed the Black Family, demonized Black Fathers and removed them from their children. Now we are doing the same thing to White America.
Fathers not Welfare. Families not AFDC. That is what is needed to turn this mess around. And it needs to start with Morally courageous Black Pastors.

This horses ass, is a Moran of the highest degree.
OPS4 God Bless America!
...and when they sell all those items to buy crack, the government should replace it all within 24 hours. /s
LOL! In other words, professor of nothing.
"Marriage is a smoke screen to deflect public attention of governmental obligations such as providing jobs and fair wages, he said. "
"That is the lib solution for every problem - throw more money at it. Responsible behavior is not even considered. Just let the government solve all your problems."
Here is my suggestion. The libs should have a telethon to help finance the provision of jobs and fair wages for individuals less foirtunate than themselves.
Kerry and Kennedy can start by giving everything their families own since they never made it themselves.
