Key gun lobby sits out election (VA Gov Race)
The Washington Times ^ | 10/1/2005 | By Christina Bellantoni

A key Virginia gun rights lobby said yesterday that it will not endorse a candidate in the gubernatorial race but is urging its members not to sit out the election, as many did in 2001...

Mr. Kilgore will not be seeking the group's [VCDL's] endorsement, campaign spokesman Tucker Martin said.

"While we have great respect for the members of the VCDL, their President Phillip Van Cleave unfortunately has no credibility on Second Amendment issues and that is why we did not participate," Mr. Martin said, declining to elaborate.

Ouch. The latest polls have the Kilgore & Kaine campaigns running neck and neck. This was a stupid move by the Kilgore people. VCDL has a lot of credibility with Virginia gun owners, and was first gun group to report the BATF "residence check" incidents.

If an apology doesn't come soon, expect a lot of undervotes in the Governor's race this fall.

Just another example of STOOOOOOOPID POLITICO!

VCDL and its leadership have the most credibility in the Virginia "gun fight."

If a polititian is not willing to be photgraphed shooting and or posing with a "black" rifle, he doesn't "get" the Second Amendment and shouldn't be trusted (if a polititian can be trusted in any case).

Write in on the ticket "Philip Van Cleave". We honestly won't lose much in this race if Kaine wins due to the fact that not only will Bolling win but we will keep the Legislature and the Senate.

By doing a write in campaign, we'll send a strong message that gun owners shouldn't be taken for granted in Virginia and it may put some steel in the backbones of the Republicans nationwide and we could finally see some movement on the gun rights issue on the Federal level.

I will not vote for Kilgore when he obviously has so much to hide concerning gun owners. The fact that he has attempted to defame the character of Philip Van Cleave doesn't sit well with me either. I'm removing all the Kilgore stickers from my car as well.

I like the Write in idea. In races where none of the clowns are entertaining, I have written in NOTA (none of the above). In this case, and not knowing all the races on the Nov 8th ballot, writing in Philip's name might send an additonal message.

"...no credibility..." indeed!

This is exactly why smart politicans try to avoid dealing with single issue groups. The rats are dying because of doing just this. Kilgore may just die too but it's the single issue gang that's the problem as they always are.

Is this just a case of bad advice from his staff in an attempt to gain support from otherwise liberal areas of the state? Whether he gets that support remains to be seen. Instead of simply refusing the survey he went out of his way to impeach Mr Van Cleave's reputation. Either he truly didn't think his position through or he's covering luke warm support for the 2nd Amendment. In the past Mr. Kilgore has gone out of his way to associate with 'respectable hunters'. By implication this also bought general gun owner support. In light of current behavior this brings his position on guns into question. Was he merely using the hunters to gain what he knew wasn't certain if his true views were known? This behavior is certain to arouse more intense scrutiny on both sides of the gun issue. It's likely at this stage of the campaign more scrutiny really isn't what his campaign as after.

If it's a case of bad advice then Mr. Tucker should be fired. Since that hasn't happened, and no apology is forthcoming, then I can only assume that the Kilgore campaign is willing to turn off the hard-core activist gun owners.

IMO this makes no sense. Kaine has now pulled ahead of Kilgore in the polls, and I've heard local officials state that they are worried about the lack of interest in this election. They expect very low turnouts, and a few hundred votes could swing some key races. So, why insult a group of people who are among the most likely to go vote on election day?
