His best explanation offered so far is:
"I was pointing out that abortion should not be opposed for economic reasons, any more than racism or for that matter slavery or segregation should be supported or opposed for economic reasons," he said. "Immoral policies are wrong because they are wrong, not because of an economic calculation. One could just as easily have said you could abort all children and prevent all crime, to show the absurdity of the proposition."

I think African Americans have already been doing this. The numbers are shocking. African-American women constitute 13.5% of the U.S. female population but they undergo 34% of all the abortions in this country. Their abortion rate (31 per 1,000 women) is approximately 2.6 times the rate for white women (12 per 1,000). The abortion industry reports very few statistics and strongly resists any effort at reporting more, so we must estimate further conclusions: African-American pro-life activists estimate that about 1,400 black babies have died in abortions, on average, each day since abortion was mandated a constitutional right. That makes 546,000 killed per year, or about 15 million people since Roe v. Wade.

I have been saying that for at least 20 years. My policy would be that any woman on welfare - and we know that happens for many reasons - is allowed two strikes. If she wishes to continue taking welfare payments, she must undergo sterilization. Welfare was not implemented for long-term use. It was started as a means for people who are unable to care for themselves temporarily. It has been bastardized by the democrat party into a plantation whereby they keep the underclass poor under voting control.

Oh it's silly. It almost sounds like he believes there is a correlation between abortion of black children and the birth of black children. There is no way they can be connected.

Yeah but at this point I don't think Anne's brand of punditry would be appropiate.

It must be consistently stressed that sterilization in exchange for welfare payments is color-blind in terms of race.
It is the only humane manner to decrease the never-ending cradle to grave welfare class and the crime rate.
There is no excuse for continuous welfare in this country.

"Bennett's toast. Next."
Are you referring to it being Bennett's turn to toast?
Bennett will be toasting the town as his listening audience will now increase exponentially.
To: InvisibleChurch
Of course, Bennett's remarks were not racist or mean-spirited at all, but I can't help but wonder...
WHAT was he THINKING??? Why would such a smart man say something which could so easily be taken out of context, and when taken out of context, would sound so horrible?

Yeah, I think Bill made the right choice by asking her to come on another time but I would have loved to hear her comment on Bill's comment about Ted Kennedy last night.

"I do know that its true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down. Well, duh. This statement is transparently true. First of all, eliminating ANY segment of the population would reduce crime somewhat, since you'd have both fewer potential perps and fewer potential victims. Plus:
1.) Crime is created out of the desperation of poverty -- Liberal Talking Point
2.) Blacks are disproportionately in poverty due to oppression by The Man -- Liberal Talking Point
Therefore, the crime rate among blacks is higher than in the general population. Q.E.D.

Exactly what the dems have been trying to make it since the clinton administration came into office. They are just hitting it harder as they lose voters, trying to lure them back.

I like Ann Coulter a lot, but I really am wondering why the Republican senators and representatives havn't spoken up in Bennett's defense of this crap from the far left? Why should we rely on non-elected folks, like Ann, like Rush, and like Sean to show the American public the hypocrisy of the Demorats like Reid, Kennedy, et. al.? It is a damning silence I'm hearing from our side in Washington, and now I'm really pi**ed at the lack of leadership we really have. Why does it take Bill Bennett, on t.v. last night, to point out that Teddy Kennedy has no right to pass any moral judgment because the fool killed a girl, and showed no moral compass then or now? I say let's put it all on the table and find out who's right and who's wrong. I'm tired of the one-way dialog in this country and it's damn past time for us to wake up and sell the coffee!

Does anyone have the stats on race and crime in America? I will bet he has a statistical base for the hypothetical but from the PC standpoint he is toast.

The "outrage" from the left speaks volumes to the credibility of what Bill Bennett said. All the left wing hypocrites getting this upset over something a talk show host said? How many "outrageous" things has Rush Limbaugh said that the hacks in Washington don't bother to respond to? Although I think Bill Bennet could have made his point in a more affable way, he illustrated a truth and he hit a nerve when it comes to addressing the inherent racism of "pro-choice".
