Bill Gates Donates $40 Million To High School

September 27, 2005 10:05 p.m. EST

Christina Ficara - All Headline News Staff Reporter

Seattle, Washington (AHN) - Bill Gates announces his decision to give back to the school responsible for his bank-breaking success in the computer business. Lakeside School in Seattle is receiving $40 million the Microsoft founder who left the school in 1973.

The money is intended to fund scholarships to help underprivileged children attend the private school.

Gates says, "I can say without Lakeside there would be no Microsoft, and I'm here to say thank you."

A timetable system for the school was among his first commercial software programs.

Maia Mulligan, spokeswoman for the Seattle school, says, "It's an incredibly generous gift - and also idealistic, giving access to the school to children from all across the city."

The Lakeside School donation is made through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In its first five years, the foundation has given almost $2.4 billion in donations to education - including $1.2 billion in scholarships.

As well as supporting scholarships, the funding will pay for a project in which pupils from the school spend time in developing countries.

Ever have any proof for anything you post? I haven't seen any yet, and just exposed several of your claims as bogus on another thread.

Concerning this thread, the Gates Foundation insists none of their philantropic contributions to world health are allowed to be used for abortions. What proof do you have that they specifically are? Keep in mind you are criticising someone whose donations to sick and poor nations has exceeded that of the entire US government over the course of entire years.

The US Governement gives billions each year in aid. No single person donates anything near what the US Taxpayer as a group does.

Huh, that's funny. I could have sworn giving underprivileged children scholarships to private school was racist, homophobic, religiously-bigoted and aimed at destroying the public school system. All the media here in Seattle keep telling me that, so it must be true.

Read my post and my link.

An analysis by the Boston Globe showed that last year alone, the Gates Foundation gave $1.44 billion to fund health programs for poor nations, compared to $1.16 billion given by the U.S. government. The money went to fight diseases such as AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

A pity. IMHO MS has been much more of a hindrance than a help in the development of software and the Internet.

No way, as much as you may not like windows, it has served it purpose and has set us forward with one unifying system, that programers could see as a standard. Windows also brought millions of people to the internet. Not to mention MS's great office products.

Gates donates a lot of money to the UN...yes. But so do we as a nation and a ton of Republicans (Gates is one of them), tend to for some reason or another stick up for that dump in NYC and continue to believe that giving them big checks solves the worlds problems.

I like Gates and believe he does a lot of good. But he is human and makes mistakes like the rest of us. Some investments are good...others horrible.

Well that just plain old sucks. Too bad for him, he'll wish he acted differently in the end. Anyway, my comment was just a poor sarcastic jab at all the Microsoft haters, and lefties that hate corporations and the capitalism they stand for.
