Report: Illegal immigration has increased

9/27/2005, 7:22 a.m. PT
By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The pace of illegal immigration to the United States has increased despite tighter security measures and it generally parallels the pace of economic growth and the availability of jobs, a report said Tuesday.

The report by the Pew Hispanic Center also found that the stronger security steps since the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 have had the effect of reducing legal immigration.

Overall, immigration to the United States declined along with the economy after 2000, but the report says the number of people trying to get into the country is on the upswing again.

Immigration — both legal and illegal — topped 1.5 million people in 1999 and 2000, according to the report. The number of people entering the United States then plummeted to 1.1 million people by 2003, the same level it was at in 1992.

Immigration levels bounced back to 1.2 million in 2004, but the report cautioned that it is difficult to predict whether the recent upswing is part of a new trend.

"The extremely high (immigration) flows at the end of the past decade were not the norm, nor part of a long-term trend, but rather the peak of a momentary increase that lasted for only a few years," said the report, authored by demographer Jeffrey Passal and Roberto Suro, a former journalist who heads the Pew Hispanic Center. "Thus, even as the United States consistently experiences historically high rates of migration, flows are subject to considerable variation."

The report documents immigration levels from 1992 to 2004, generating estimates from a variety of Census data. The report acknowledges weaknesses in the data, especially when it comes to estimating annual changes in the number of illegal immigrants trying to enter the country.

The Pew Hispanic Center is a nonpartisan research organization supported by the Pew Charitable Trusts.

Immigration levels closely mirror economic conditions in the United States — as the economy improves, immigration increases — suggesting that the lure of jobs is a strong factor in attracting people to this country, the report says. The U.S. economy appears to be a stronger factor than economic conditions in the countries sending immigrants here, the report says.

Among the reports findings:

_Since 2001, the number of legal permanent residents entering the United States has declined from 578,000 to 455,000, while the number of illegal immigrants has increased from 549,000 to 562,000. Legal, temporary residents account for the remainder of people entering the country.

Declines in legal immigration "appear to reflect processing backlogs, security delays and other developments that followed the Sept. 11 attacks," the report says.

_Mexico accounted for about a third of all U.S. immigrants, a percentage that was steady from 1992 to 2004.

_More immigrants are shunning states with large immigrant communities, such as New York and California, and moving to states with smaller foreign-born populations, such as North Carolina and Iowa.

And we can thank the Bush Administration and the GOP controlled Congress for this.

>>>>REPORT: Illegal immigration has increased.

Why am I not surprised.

The President doesn't want immigration reform. He wants to keep the borders wide open and illegals flowing into the country in an appeal for the Hispanic vote and to satisfy GOP business interests with continued cheap labor. If another terrorist attack happens again on US soil and it can be traced to Bush`s open border policy, the President will be severely damaged.

Bush would be finished if that happened. I would expect calls for impeachment.

Report: Employers lag on immigration effort

"Under the former INS and now ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement,) worksite enforcement has been a relatively low priority," says the report, which was released Wednesday.

And enforcement efforts have decreased in recent years. The report found that:

* In 1999, INS devoted about 9 percent of its agent investigative work years to worksite enforcement. In 2003, that dropped to 4 percent.

* In 1999, INS issued 417 notices that it intended to fine an employer. In 2003, ICE issued three such notices.

* In 1999, there were 2,849 workplace arrests of unauthorized workers. In 2003 there were 445.

Department of Homeland Security officials generally agreed with the findings of the GAO study.

======================

What can you do with 70,000 terrorists?
(click)

To date, some 1 million non-Mexicans have entered the U.S. through Mexico, of which about 700,000 have disappeared, according to a report in the Dallas Morning News.

No one knows how many might be terrorists, though rough estimates are that about 70,000 of those non-Mexicans are Saudis between the ages of 18 and 34.

Ponder that as you abhor racial profiling and replenish your stores of duct tape.

How would you like to take 300,000 to 1 odds on immigration reform?

N.C. congresswoman: Why does state have one deportation officer? (Resident killed by illegal alien.)

Though North Carolina has an estimated 300,000 illegal immigrants, the state has one federal deportation officer who's among fewer than 10 people in the state who work for Detention and Removal Operations, a unit of ICE.

300,000 -to- 1

3!? 3!? I could go sit any morning at a local gas station where dozens of illegals hang out waiting to be picked up by contractors and find 3 employers to fine in about 5 minutes...and this scene is duplicated on thousands of street corners in America every morning

Oh... he wants immigration "reform" alright. What he wants, effectively, is to have border agents handing out cards to anyone approaching the border -- as well as the ones already here (amnesty) -- so they can come in at will (not that they aren't already) and "legally" to "take the jobs Americans won't do." What he wants is for even more millions to come into the country "legally" to further reduce wages and benefits for us lazy, bigoted American workers. The Gulf Coast "rebuilding effort" will allow him to transform and entire region of the country "socially," as he says. He has already used the EO to allow lower wages and Homeland Security" will not enforce sanctions against employers who hire workers without proper documentation. Bush is working on his "guest-worker" program to make it all "legal."

They need to build the wall to stop the influx of illegals. Then round them up and deport them.

1) While the wall is being built heavy fines and imprisonment to any person who hires illegals should be imposed.

2) All social and welfare programs to illegals should be cut. No money, no health care, etc.

3)Hospitals should call the police to arrest illegals that seek care.

4)Make it law that children born in the US to illegal parents are NOT citizens.

Dry up the jobs and the free stuff and they will have no reason to come here.

Just to mention... as far as the "rebuilding effort" goes... the people down on the Gulf Coast have endured two ravaging storms and are about to endure a massive wave of illegal alien immigration funded by our tax dollars.
