Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) had the look of a hunted man as he walked from the Capitol to the Longworth House Office Building yesterday for a speech to young conservatives.
Pence, chairman of a group of House conservatives called the Republican Study Committee, was complaining to his companions about a Robert Novak column in yesterday's Washington Post saying Pence was subjected to a "closed-door auto-da-fe" from Speaker Dennis Hastert and Majority Leader Tom DeLay for daring to suggest that the profligate House leadership should reconsider its big-spending ways. But Pence got the leadership's message, loud and clear.
Pence's speech was billed by the conservative Young America's Foundation (YAF) as a discussion of "why the conservative leadership in Congress has abandoned its allegiance to the principles of smaller government" and gone on "massive spending splurges." But instead, a chastened congressman delivered unstinting praise for his superiors.
"I believe in the leadership of this Congress," Pence told his surprised audience. "I believe in the men and women who lead the House of Representatives and the Senate. I see them as men and women of integrity and principle, who work every day to bring the ideals of our Founders into the well of the people's house."
To the further surprise of his YAF hosts, Pence left the room without the promised Q&A. "Unfortunately, the congressman will be unable to answer questions today," a befuddled young host ad-libbed. "But we are going to have a door prize."

a lot of articles on pence today. This one needs some explanation.... Shame on the bloated republican leadership.
Stop giving to the Republican party and give to the Club for Growth.

ComPost spin - I'll wait to get the real story on Pence's website.
Republicans do not believe in smaller, less intrusive government. No amount of cheerleading and self-deception can change it.
The natural enemy of this spending is Pence's 110-member Republican Study Committee in the House. House GOP leaders have taken to calling the group "the minority caucus," believing that Republicans would return to minority status if they were to follow its recommendations.

This is the cake. Repubicans care more about power than principle. And we voted for them...
We need to make this 'minority' party the majority party. Power hungry Republicans and the democrats are one and the same and we must work to defeat them:

This is very sad. Pence is one of the good guys. He'd be there beside Newt and Dick Armey in the early 90's when the GOP in Congress stood for something. Today the GOP is not a Conservative Party. It is a governing party. Time for many of us to choose are we Conservatives or Republicans FIRST? They have us because there really isn't a realistic alternative. The War On Terror and The Courts can't be handed to Dems. On the other hand, we need to fight for principal and make it known this growth of government is unacceptable.
Pence IS the real deal, and yes LET US NOW CHOOSE, let us now stand for something, or we will be shown holding (onto) nothing in the END>>? \
If you really want to stand for something and are sick of Big_Government_Republicanism support PENCE POTUS-08! DraftPence08
Viva La Liberty (Let The Revolution Begin)!
Sounds like Pence got the shiite scared out of him. Now I wonder if the Republican leadership is corrupt.
They don't even bother to tell us their basic strategy, how specifically they hope to affect policy. Lobbying, research, education?
Looks to me like someone wants you and me to pay for his mortgage.
Why would the ComPost write a story about a conservative Republican speaking to a conservative group?
Are you talking about the club for growth?
If you are, perhaps you should do just a tad more research before you flap your gums.

This is far more important than Rush and Hannity babbling on about the evils of the Democratic party. If the Republican party and conservatives in it can't get spending and government growth under control, fiscal conservativism is all but dead.
I don't think you have to wonder. I think it's obvious it is.
Amen. And, if that means letting the Republicans lose an election or two, so be it. Right now, we'd be better off with gridlock as gridlock is the only thing that seems to slow down the runaway growth of government and spending.
I read much of the link you posted. I'm not sure I'll support the Club for Growth but I had decided I would not send a donation to the national GOP but instead would select candidates I agree with. It seems to me that is what this organization is doing.
Am I wrong?
They do somewhat more than that, including creating and airing ads directed both at getting their candidates elected and drawing attention to republicans who are betraying party principles.
I'd say giving to club for growth help keeps the feet of politicians to the fire instead of giving the politicians the cash directly.
Right. Only half of what Dana Milbank writes is true, and you never know which half.
w/ NYT...They're the Official National DemocRATic Committee "mouthpiece"
Yes, and it's also far more interesting radio than the usual GOP glee club garbage.
