AUSTIN - Visiting his home state for a firsthand look at the response to Hurricane Rita, President Bush praised emergency operations Saturday and urged Texans, particularly Houstonians, to heed the instructions of state authorities in the aftermath.
"I know for a lot of folks in the state it's been a miserable time," Bush said at the Texas Emergency Operations Center here.
Criticized during the Hurricane Katrina aftermath for being out of touch with the crisis, Bush showed a notable engagement with Rita details. He warned motorists who might want to instantly return to Houston after evacuating the area that nurses needed a way through the gridlock to get to work at the city's hospitals.
"I would ask for those of you in the state who are in safe places now, not to hurry back to a city like Houston, and let these highways flow with necessary goods and services to the people in deep East Texas who have been affected," he said.
Striking a balance
Bush is taking a more high-profile role in storm response oversight. For two days in Texas, he strove to stay on the right side of the line between providing a watchful, authoritative presence and getting in the way of rescue operations.

Thank you Mr. President.
I agree, Colonial Warrior.
Prayers for all the folks affected by Hurricane Rita
He looks tired. Pray for him especially, for he has tremendous burdens. He needs our support.
Yes, President Bush looks very tired.
I mentioned this to my brother today. President Bush looks like he has not slept for days.
I support President Bush, my prayers are with him
"...the illegal aliens that I love so much need to rape the city for its resources. I'm going to save the country from al-Qaida so that Mexico can have it instead. Vicente Fox, my lord and master, told me that lettuce prices will rise a dollar a pound if I enforce the law, living in gang-land is such a better option. Have a heart, you wanted to live in a 3rd-world country anyway. al-Qaeda out, Mexican meth gangs in. Isn't that great?"
If you are still wearing your radiation badge, better take a look at it.
I do have a tree on my house and that's why Rita was in my rearview mirror. I didn't learn from Katrina; I already knew that hurricanes are bad and wind blows trees down. I ran from falling trees and thankful I did.
I praise God for your safety.
Did you have problems with traffic jams?
Hmm, I don't know about that. You can always tell a Texan, but you can't tell him much.
Ducking for cover from my Texas friends.
We always listen to advice, we just don't always *take* it.
Didn't have a problem traveling. Went North and doubled back to the southwest. Went the speed limit on back roads. Actually it was a nice ride and roads I had never been on before. Took 5 hours to make a 3 hour trip--but I intenionally went a longer route--and took a 30 minute break to eat and buy gas. ($2.85 per)
Sounds as if you were well prepared and did things sensibly.
Thank goodness everything turned out well for you...er...except for the tree part. Sorry about that.
LOL! Are y'all helping Mr. Nagin feel right at home in his new Dallas digs? :-)
After five years in the Oval Office, President Bush appears to have aged 10 years.
As if the job isn't stressful enough, all the piling on from the left has to take a toll after a while.
I don't know Larry. Last time I was in Texas, the Texans looked like Mexicans to me. And your right, I couldn't tell them anything, they didn't speak English.
We're still looking for it. He didn't buy his house, at least not in his own name. (He doesn't show up on the property tax rolls.)
He's been keeping a *very* low profile in Dallas. I'd say I wonder why, but I don't, and I'm sure he knows what's going to happen if people find out where he lives.
Not only do we blame him for having to deal with *his* refugee problem, we know that as a people we can and did do better than he did. He has much to answer for, from our point of view.
I may look like a Mexican to some, but I speak English just fine. Probably better than you do.
I wouldn't call throwing out the first pitch at a Texas Rangers game keeping a low profile.
As for insurance, etc., it's on the bar at home. Oh, well.
I have an El Camino full of gas that I'm going to tell friends to feel free to siphon. There is none in town and they are having to conserve on their generaters. Those who are lucky enough to have them.
I have a bed-ridden mother who I had to get out of there. I have a cousin who is having trouble locating another aunt who was evacuated with elderlies to who knows where. I wanted my mother with me wherever that might be.
