UK scientist slams U.S. climate 'loonies'

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- A leading British scientist said on Friday the growing ferocity of hurricanes hitting the United States was very probably caused by global warming and criticized what he termed U.S. "climate loonies" over the issue.

Sir John Lawton, chairman of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution which advises the government, made what the Independent newspaper said was a thinly disguised attack on the stance of U.S. President George W. Bush's administration.

"The increased intensity of these kinds of extreme storms is very likely to be due to global warming," Lawton told the newspaper in an interview.

"If this makes the climate loonies in the States realize we've got a problem, some good will come out of a truly awful situation," said Lawton.

I would love to have seen the look on his face when Blair came out blasting Kyoto at a Clinton dinner!

I also would like to know if someone like Lawton (I am assuming that he is a wealthy individual) is willing to give up his nice cars and limos, and move to a much smaller house that is more efficient. He certainly doesn't NEED a big home, and I would wager that his house is much more than he NEEDS.

What these people don't understand is that the problem is Rove's weather machine @ Halliburton's corporate office.

He is using it to damage Gulf cities so that Halliburton can get no-bid clean up contracts, and as a way to justify more military spending via the Carlyle Group.

Duh!

They fail to mention that he is a zoologist, not a climatologist. His scientific interests are wide, but have focused on the population dynamics and biodiversity of birds and insects, with emphasis over the last decade on the impacts of global environmental change on wild plants and animals.

Is this the same climate change that caused major storms to strike both New Orleans and Galveston in the same year, just 90 years ago? (For the geographically challenged that's Louisiana and Texas in September and August of 1915, respectively.)

It is true that hurricanes 'like' warmer water. Hurricanes are also affected by worldwide climate patterns - like El Nino.

No responsible scientist can say that human activity is making these hurricanes worse.

Your absolutely right and after Halliburton has cleared away all the old residential areas they will be able to go into those areas and drill for oil to make even more money for Cheney and friends.............

I can't believe everyone doesn't see how simple it all is.

Global warming also explains why there are so many hurricanes on Mars.

He studied bugs for 17 years, and this makes him an expert on climate?

It makes him loony, IMHO

"Professor Sir John Lawton Professor Sir John Lawton chairs the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, following his retirement as Chief Executive of the Natural Environment Research Council. He is a distinguished researcher whose work has provided a major contribution in understanding the natural world. A Lancastrian, who began his career in Durham, he took his doctorate at Oxford before becoming a lecturer at York in 1971. He was a member of the academic staff of the Biology department at York for 17 years, during which he undertook detailed investigation of the insect fauna of bracken on Skipwith Common, near Selby, which stands as a model of sustained and intensive ecological research."

State Climatologist George H. Taylor has been getting a lot of flak from the greenies here in Oregon over his opinion of "Global Warming". Wonder if he'll be seeing a pink slip soon.

Oregon's official weatherman has good news about global warming - It doesn't exist
