Groups call arms seizures 'arbitrary'

By Joyce Howard Price
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Published September 23, 2005

Two national gun rights groups yesterday joined individual Louisiana gun owners in a federal lawsuit to stop authorities from confiscating firearms from private citizens in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) and the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) filed a motion in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, seeking a temporary restraining order to halt the seizures of guns from law-abiding citizens. They described the confiscations as "arbitrary," "without warrant or probable cause" and thus "illegal."

New Orleans Police Superintendent P. Edwin Compass III "completely overstepped his bounds ... when he announced two weeks ago in the New York Times that only law-enforcement personnel are allowed to have weapons," Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the 3-million member NRA said in an interview yesterday.

The police superintendent's comments were echoed by the city's Deputy Police Chief Warren Riley, who told ABC News: "No one will be able to be armed. We are going to take all the weapons."

SAF founder Alan Gottlieb called the gun seizures "outrageous" and "illegal." He said New Orleans officials have refused to tell gun rights groups why they are now leaving citizens, already devastated by the Category 4 hurricane, "defenseless against lingering bands of looters and thugs."

They "left us with no recourse" but litigation, Mr. Gottlieb said.

Mr. LaPierre noted TV news coverage showing law-enforcement personnel going door-to-door to seize guns from New Orleans-area residents -- an action he said is unprecedented in U.S. history.

Are Iraqi households still allowed one firearm, usually an Ak as I recall?
So if we want our 2nd Amendment right respected, we have to move to Baghdad?

People need to be arrested, tried, convicted and sent to prison stripped of their bloated government pensions.

I would hate to be the gentleman that "arbitrarily" asked me for my weapon.

Good lookin' out, Deputy Chief. It's amazing that they could spare the manpower and resources to conduct this seizure. Apparently, they had nothing better to do.

"Apparently, they had nothing better to do."

I'm sure they'll start with the roving gangs of looters and other criminals.

When some one asks for your weapon, give it to them.

Anti Jack-Booted-ThugTM Sarcasm Torpedo ARMED. FIRE!!

Here's the real deal:

1. Katrina hits, N.O. police and other officials get "stuck on stupid"
2. Because of point 1 above, the druggies and other thugs (some imported from elsewhere) go to the Wal-Marts and gun-stores and help themselves.
3. Because of this, the govt. (including AWOL cops) finds themselves outgunned.
4. In order to get guns, the govt. goes around illegally confiscating the guns of lawful gun owners. They use the results of their own negligence (see points 1 and 2 above) to justify this.
5. As political cover, the police issue the inane statement "No one will be able to be armed. We are going to take all the weapons."
In Hillaryspeak, this translates to "We're going to take away what is yours and use it for the common good."

Full Disclosure: Reminds me of the bands of low-life hangers-on of Saruman's who took over the Shire in The Scouring of the Shire in the LOTR books.

No Cheers, unfortunately.

LOL! Your synopsis is probably more accurate than I'd like to believe. Hmm. Either you used a superscript, or extended range ASCII characters don't copy and paste...

The Mayor of New Orleans needs to be seized and charged with criminal negligence and numerous counts of manslaughter.

"I would hate to be the gentleman that "arbitrarily" asked me for my weapon."

*Anyone* who wants to seize my guns will get the bullets first. If the thug is wearing a badge then he's just a thug wearing a badge and when the issue is protecting yourself and especially your family I'd have no trouble with doing whatever is necessary to insure the safety of your family.

Decent cops would know better than to enforce unConstitutional and immoral orders.

"That would be called murder."

The men who drafted the Second Amendment would call it "resisting tyranny".

A jury of your peers would call it murder and you would be sentenced accordingly.

You need to get a better grasp on reality.

So if you had been living in the Warsaw Ghetto, you would have turned over your arms as well? How about at Boston Common?

Defending yourself against theft or agression is ALWAYS a good thing.

What a preposterous scenario you present.

In any State in the US, if you shoot a law enforcement officer in the conduct of his duties and kill him, you will be convicted of murder and be sentenced accordingly.

And bring vaseline because you will need it.
