CONROE - Police are trying to locate the family of a 10-year-old Pasadena boy who was left behind at a convenience store Thursday afternoon as relatives continued their evacuation trek.

Conroe police spokesman Sgt. Bob Berry said the family was traveling in a five-car caravan from Pasadena headed to Dallas when they stopped in Conroe.

He said the family members went into the store as a group but apparently did not do a head count when they left and got back into their cars.

The boy told police he turned around and his family was gone.

I feel sorry for the boy and the parents.

I hope the police, prosecutor, etc. do not over-react and prosecute the parents.

Ron Howard told a similar story of his family on vacation. Seems they were in a 3 car caravan and someone in car 3 called him (in car one) asking where the teenage son was.

Turns out, they'd left him at a Kryspy Kreme or something like that.

I feel sorry for the boy.

If it was clear that it was an honest mistake, the police won't prosecute. These stories happen in a lot of families in non stressful times. If there's a 5 car caravan, the family may assume that he's in another car.

The parents, well I can empathize, but the kid will tell this story for a lo-o-o-o-o-ong time.

Hey, it happens. It looks like the boy will be well cared for, which is what is important. Sometimes you just gotta go with the "all's well that ends well" attitude.

On the most inopportune occasions...

This happened to one of my grandsons, who was 8 at the time. Several carloads of us went out into the boondocks to do some target shooting. When we left, his parents thought he had gotten into our car, and we thought he was with his parents. Thank heaven for cell phones. We figured out he wasn't with us about five minutes later and went back.
