Blown fuse cuts power at U.N. headquarters

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - A blown fuse cut power to the top 23 floors of the U.N. headquarters on Monday, sending nonessential staff home on the third day of the annual General Assembly debate.

Officials said there had been no threat against the building, and the debate continued uninterrupted. The U.N. Web site was down as was phone service in the 39-story tower on Manhattan's East Side.

The outage forced U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to relocate his lunch with the foreign ministers and ambassadors of the five permanent members of the Security Council, Britain, France, Russia, China and the United States.

Annan's chief of staff, Mark Malloch Brown, quipped during the lunch that the outage would give U.S. Ambassador John Bolton the chance to prove his claim, made 11 years ago, that it wouldn't make a "bit of difference" if the Secretariat lost its top 10 floors.

The remark drew a hearty laugh from the diplomats, their ministers - and Annan himself, the diplomat said.

U.N. officials said a 4,000-ampere fuse blew out on the 28th floor and repair work would take most of the night.

"That's a big fuse," U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said. "When the fuse blew, it welded some wiring together."

DUring that time, the UN could make less crime through illegal bank transfers and that would be a GOOD THING.

A 4000 Amp fuse? I hate to have to screw in that sucker in the dark!

Those paper shredders must draw a lot of juice.

"Blown fuse cuts power at U.N. headquarters"

Love the headline, would that it were permanently true.

As if anyone at the UN believes in the Reason for the Season.

On the other hand, April Fool's Day presents some interesting possibilities...;-D

When the fuse was replaced, they still didn't have any power . . . they never had any power in the first place.
