Three arrested at Fort Calhoun station BY CINDY GONZALEZ
As part of the "Operation Glow Worm" investigation, federal immigration agents arrested three undocumented workers who were about to enter the Omaha Public Power District's Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station to perform contract work.
The three were Mexican nationals who had been hired by an independent contractor to perform maintenance work at the nuclear plant, Tim Counts, spokesman for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said Thursday.
The men were determined not to be a national security threat or engaged in terrorist activity, Counts said.
OPPD employees contacted federal agents Tuesday after the three workers presented suspicious identification documents. The men are to be removed from the country.
Glow Worm was launched by ICE and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to screen the workforce at the nation's nuclear power plants.
The federal government's worksite enforcement efforts focus on sites that pose security threats, including chemical plants and defense facilities.
Three plants in Nebraska and Iowa were checked a few years ago, and no unauthorized workers were found then, said Mike Wardy of the Omaha ICE office.
The relationship between the plants has continued, he added, and Tuesday's arrests are the result.
"In this case, the system worked exactly the way it was supposed to," Wardy said. The nuclear plant detected the undocumented workers before they entered.
Undocumented? You mean, like they forgot their passports? Left their entrance visas at home? Misplaced their green cards? They're not "undocumented," they're "illegal."
I imagine there is a good chance they won't be deported and if they are they will be back in a couple weeks somewhere else.
Additionally the contractor should not be just fined he needs to lose his contract and be ineligible to renew it.
Worth repeating...
Undocumented? You mean, like they forgot their passports? Left their entrance visas at home? Misplaced their green cards? They're not "undocumented," they're "illegal."
They are Mexican nationals and, as such, will be immediately deported if they agree. Otherwise, they are detained for deportation hearings.
Most Mexicans opt for immediate deportation...I guess they think they can just waltz back across the border anytime they wish. Don't know what gives them that impression.
I have a co-worker who purchased a spotting scope yesterday to help in her efforts to interdict illegal alien traffic. She plans to sit on her back porch and call in the illegals to the BP. She has the BP on speed dial...

Jail the contractor for Patriot Act violations. What if those "Mexican nationals" names had been Abdullah, Mohammed, and Rahim?
There is no excuse for foreign nationals being anywhere near a nuclear power plant. The contractor should do time.
Until we begin to punish those who hire illegals, we will continue to have illegals. It's that simple.
A few exemplary trials, with long jail sentences would put the issue on the front burner and might make some of the many businesses that routinely hire illegals on notice that it's not a good idea.
The laws are on the books. Let's use them.
Seems the officials determined quickly - too quickly in my opinion - that they were not a security threat.
I was thinking the same thing.

According to my sources (Sr. Reporter for local paper, FBI), the young man has never been found. What do you think?

A drop in the bucket. They're everywhere. What's the count up to now? 15? million?
