John Roberts to Sen. Schumer: 'Dr. Zhivago!'
NewsMax ^ | 9/14/05 | AP

After two days of intense legal questioning, Supreme Court nominee John Roberts finally addressed a subject most Americans could relate to: His favorite movies are "Doctor Zhivago" and "North by Northwest."

Frustrated by Roberts' answers, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., suggested on Wednesday that if he dared to ask the nominee his favorite films, he would get a discussion of cinematography and why "Casablanca" is considered one of the greatest. Instead, Roberts answered flat out, bringing laughter from the audience and senators alike.

"North by Northwest," Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 classic, starred Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason and Martin Landau, and included a death-defying scramble on the face of Mount Rushmore.

"Doctor Zhivago," the 1965 film directed by David Lean, was described as "a love caught in the fire of revolution" and starred Omar Sharif, Julie Christie and Rod Steiger.

If I was Roberts, I would have asked Schumer if he had been to a psychiatrist lately!

At least Roberts has good taste in films. Those are two of my favorites as well.

The thing most Americans don't understand about Dr. Zhivago is that by Russian standards, the story ends happily. I mean, those people all basically die of old age. You really don't want to see what the Russian version of a sad ending looks like...

He should have blurted "The Stepford Wives!" just to get them riled up.

He's dancing circles around those ignorant fools. Watching the show is like listening to a symphony!

The film of Doctor Zhivago would have been better if not for the two leads being aggressively bad actors (Omar Shariff and Julie Christie) 'Lara's Theme', that most pernicious of ear worms, now floating through skull unimpeded...

I own every Alfred Hitchcock movie that is in release and have seen them all at least a dozen times, I love "North by Northwest" (it and "Vertigo" are my favorites). I've only seen "Dr. Zhivago" once and that was a long time ago. I wonder what Schumer would have said if Roberts said his favorite movie was "Reefer Madness" or "A Clockwork Orange" or some other such movie.

North By Northwest rules. Good choice, Mr. Soon-To-Be Chief Justice.

We'll never know if that would have happened since Dostoevsky never finished it.

I was thinking more along the lines of "THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE".

Schumer is an idiot. And the Republicans should have grilled Ginsburg, and voted against her.
