Greyhound Bus complains about New Orleans jail name

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Reuters) - Greyhound Bus Lines complained to Louisiana's prisons department to stop referring to a temporary New Orleans jail, that was once its bus station, as Camp Greyhound, a prisons official said on Monday.

The Greyhound bus station in New Orleans was converted into a makeshift jail by police trying to restore law and order in a city rife with crime and lawlessness in the days after Hurricane Katrina hit.

"Greyhound called us on Friday and asked us not to refer to it as Camp Greyhound anymore," Pam Laborde, communications director of Louisiana's department of corrections told a new conference.

Laborde said the jail would now be known as Angola South.

Those held in the temporary jail are not only criminals that took part in the crime spree after the hurricane, but also prisoners from the city's Angola prison -- America's largest maximum-security prison notorious for its hardened criminals and tough guards.

Let me see if I've got this straight:
New Orleans has a prison, which based on their population must have a majority of black inmates, named ANGOLA?!

And they have the nerve to call Bush a racist?!

The Prison named Angola is actually near the Mississippi river where it meets the State of Mississippi about 100 miles north-east of New Orleans.

It's a name the inmates can relate to.

This reminds me of the time that Norm McDonald said on Weekend Update that the Cleveland Indians had caved in to pressure from Native American groups and had changed their team nickname. They would henceforth be known as the Drunken Indians. "That's even worse, in a way."

In high school, they took us to the prison as part of civics or something. We saw the electric chair among basic prison stuff (no soap-on-the-roap moments).

I think Nagin is just trying to get back at them because they didn't send any Greyhounds for him to evacuate with. Instead, he was stuck with useless school buses. (Of course, they were useless because he didn't want to use them, but who cares about details...RIGHT?)
