A 10-month-old baby is fighting for her life after being attacked for her necklace on a busy New York street.
Horrified witnesses said a man lunged at little Isabelle Avins in her stroller and began stabbing her with one hand as he tried to rip off her gold chain with the other.
The girl's 20-year-old nanny tried to fend off the man but was overpowered.
'He just came out of nowhere,' eyewitness Hennessey Arias told the New York Post newspaper.
'The baby had a chain on her neck, a simple little chain, not all that much.
'Everything happened so fast, I can't tell you if he got the chain or not.
'The baby was hysterical, crying, trying to gag for air.'
Ms Arias, a nurse, said the nanny, who was not identified, tried desperately to fend off the man.
'She was crazy, you know, like it was her own kid,' she said.
When the man ran off - with passers-by in hot pursuit - the nanny scooped up the child in her arms and ran to a nearby hospital.
The baby underwent surgery on Wednesday night and is currently in a critical but stable condition.
The man 'just opened her up', a police source told the paper.
'She was nearly disemboweled.'
The baby's father, Mr Jon Avins, later hailed the nanny, passers-by and the police as heroes for their response to the attack, which occurred about 5pm on Tuesday on the corner of West 171st Street and Fort Washington Avenue.
The attacker, who has a history of psychiatric problems, managed to outrun his pursuers, but was arrested later at a homeless shelter and charged with attempted murder.
The weapon, a white-handled, 12cm-long kitchen knife, was found in an alley nearby.
I doubt very seriously the nanny was thinking "this is like my own kid I must save her" - but thank God she did what she did regardless of the relationship!
we really need to brink back public stonong for crimes like this.
If the passers by had been armed, the problem would have been solved ... and the next guy would have thought about grabbing every shiny thing regardless.
and they probably wont be able to do anything but slap the animals hand because he is an incompetent. they are never handled like people.

A mental patient's knife attack on a 10-month-old girl severed a major artery - and the baby is struggling to survive on a respirator, prosecutors revealed yesterday.
The grim details about the condition of Isabelle Avins emerged as her alleged assailant was arraigned in his hospital room and, in a bizarre turn of events, denied a psychiatric exam by a judge.
Bernard Derr, 47, a diagnosed schizophrenic who told investigators he hears "voices in his head," is accused of pouncing on Isabelle on a Washington Heights street and plunging a knife into her stomach.

More democRAT values at work. This welfare case should have been drawn and quartered as soon as his flight ended.
He will get off on an insane plea and return to sucking the welfare teat and free rooms and meals. He does not deserve to spend any more time living after attacking that child.
I think the people who decided to shut down the mental institutions and put these incompetents out on the streets to slash babies need to be held accountable. This man is crazy, people knew he was crazy, yet he was allowed to roam around and do something like this. Disgusting.
He's not crazy *enough* to escape my punishment.
If he just stabbed the baby, then he's crazy.
But he didn't just do that: He took the gold chain. He CALCULATED the action WITH A RESULTING PERSONAL REWARD TO HIMSELF.
IMHO: If a "crazy" person can put food into their orifice on a regular basis, enough to stay alive, then they ain't crazy enough to escape the punishment. Action --> personal benefit.
NO MORE CODDLING.
We all need to pray for this little baby. She needs our prayers to get through this horrible ordeal. She also needs our prayers to ask God to allow this to fade from her memory.
The attacker? I hope he dies miserably.
You know, I doubt if this scum feels the slightest regreat for doing this. He's probably just pissed off about being caught.
And, if you were to ask him whose fault all of this was...
"He CALCULATED the action WITH A RESULTING PERSONAL REWARD TO HIMSELF. "
Excellent point, proving that he wasn't "temporarily insane" but permanently psychopathic.
I wouldn't blame dad for "disappearing" this guy.
The demons are coming out of the closet.
That wasn't a human that stabbed this baby-it has merely assumed human form.
Bush's fault
Is this for real? It raises a lot of questions.
1. How did the attacker know the baby had a gold necklace on if he "came out of nowhere"? Which begs the question about it being a "simple" chain...why risk arrest, being hurt, etc. over a simple chain?
2. Why would he have to stab a 10 month old to remove it?
3. Is the nanny in on this?
The more I think about this, the more questions I have for this nanny.
Something is fishy here!
The Nanny was "in on it"? You're suspicious of the Nanny? *chuckle*
