FOXNEWS: Mayor Nagin intervened to help tourists escape New Orleans before people in Superdome
Fox News - O'Reilly | September 2, 2005 | nwrep

Posted on 09/02/2005 8:44:35 PM PDT by nwrep

Shepard Smith eyewitness report on O'Reilly: Mayor Ray Nagin intervened today to help tourists (many foreigners) staying at the upscale W hotel downtown escape New Orleans ahead of many of the people in the Superdomw. Tourists were shipped in buses to the Superdome and other connecting buses took them to safety.

Black Mayor Ray Nagin favors "W" tourists. Imagine that headline after all the racist garbage thrown at the President.

Some were Brits whose lives were being threatened inside the dome according to them. They were terrified and were in danger because they were white.

Steve Haragin that preceded Shep was emphatic and riveting...He couldn't contain his rage, but stuck exactly to the facts....

Consummate professional....

So has been Shepard. That 1-2 combo with both Steve and Shep was some of the most poignant and powerful reporting I have seen...

And they didn't inject one scrap of bias or politics...

Great stuff

I thought that too. On the other hand, imagine the international headlines if foreign tourists were murdered---and the upscale places were staked out by the criminal element. A couple of days ago, a woman interviewed on TV said the hotel she was in told her she had to leave because they could not protect her, plus they had no power water or food. She had a car and drove out of town with people beating on her car and jumping in front trying to make her stop. She was terrified.

If you consider that tourists will not likely require further sheltering but rather will flee back to their homes, it might make sense to get them out of the way quickly, giving a pause to the receiving facilities who have had a steady stream of inbound refugees. I'd also think the bus trip for the tourists would be considerably shorter like to the nearest working airport and thus the buses would be recycled sooner.

The irony is that tourism in NO is DEAD for the foreseeable future. Unless you want to take an airboat tour of Lake New Orleans.

Gawd, some guy on John Batchelor just said that rather than shooting looters the best thing for NO would be to shoot the mayor!

Tourist tells of 'murder and rape'
Kevin Meade and D.D. McNicoll
September 03, 2005
AN Australian backpacker stranded in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina has told his parents he witnessed horrific scenes while sheltering in the city's Superdome, including murders, rapes and stabbings.

John McNeil, a 20-year-old university graduate, rang his parents in Brisbane yesterday from a payphone in the foyer of the New Orleans Hilton, where about 60 foreign tourists, including 10 Australians, were sheltering under armed guard after they were rescued from the Superdome by US military personnel.

In a brief telephone call, John told his father, businessman Peter McNeil, of chaos and lawlessness in the Superdome, where more than 20,000 refugees sought shelter after the hurricane.

"He saw murders, stabbings and rapes in there," Mr McNeil said.

Mr McNeil said about 100 military personnel and police in the dome were struggling to cope with the huge crowd.

"It was just getting worse by the hour and there were gangs in there who were killing each other," he said.

Mr McNeil claimed African Americans in the Superdome had abused foreign tourists and demanded they be rescued ahead of them from the crowded football stadium, where conditions were stifling.

The 60 foreign tourists were escorted from the Superdome by military personnel. They spent one night at a medical aid post in a nearby building before they were moved to the Hilton.

Gold Coast entertainment agency owner Gary Hopes said yesterday his family had been extremely worried about his younger brother Anthony, 30, who had been missing for five days after the hurricane.

But the family was relieved to learn yesterday that Anthony was among the 60 foreigners sheltering in the Hilton.

While the Hopeses and McNeils had obtained information about their loved ones, other families across Australia were still hoping last night for up-to-date news.

With most telephone lines to the devastated city working only sporadically, and all mobile phone coverage wiped out, communications were chaotic.

Sydney woman Sharon Cullington flew to the US yesterday to find her 22-year-old daughter, Vanessa, who she had not heard from since Tuesday night.

Accompanied by her daughter's boyfriend, Toby Salmon, Ms Cullington was armed with photographs of her missing child.

"We've brought lots of photos and we're just basically going to see who's there and who we can hassle," she said.

Vanessa Cullington has been in the US since June working at a Camp Counsellors USA youth camp and was at the start of four weeks of travelling.

Ms Cullington said Vanessa had been on a train to New Orleans from Washington DC and hadn't heard about the approaching hurricane.

Tim and Joanne Miller of Rockhampton, on holiday in the US, contacted their daughter Tamara yesterday and told her that they were still awaiting evacuation after living under a bridge in the flooded city for four days.

Ms Miller said her parents had been threatened by a gun-wielding guard when they tried to board a bus.

A family spokesman for Brisbane sisters-in-law Fiona Seidel and Katie McLean, who were reported on Wednesday to be safe in a tourist hotel, said they were out of contact.

Sydney woman Denise Drake, 29, rang her mother Mercedes yesterday, saying she was trapped in one of the city's churches without food or drinkable water.

"Mum, I'm alive but I am trapped in this church. Get someone to come and rescue us. Report it, ring the embassy," Mrs Riviera said her daughter had told her.

Budget backpackers?

Asians?

Whites?

British?

This is already a worldwide incident. It is a terrible black eye for America around the world. Some people may not care a fart about that. But I'll tell you, the international image has suffered immensely. I get many difficult to answer questions now from a lot of people overseas. Bad. America has a responsibility to treat it's guests well, too, and try to get them back home, if they ever want guests again...

No way - he's just guaranteed himself a bright future in Dim politics. They're probably going to start coming out tomorrow to defend him, by accusing anyone who criticizes him of being a racist. Thery really don't have any choice. He'll play that card to the fullest and rack up 90+ percent of the vote the next time there's an election in that corner of the world.

Everyone should have been evacuated. Tourists should not have been left to fend for themselves in getting out. They can not be expected to know what to do in a hurricane. Considering NO is a major tourist destination there should have been contingency plans to evacuate tourists. I think a few chartered 777's would work. I'd cancel all the normal flights and just have charter flights to major hub airports like DFW, IAH, and ATL. That way they could catch flights to anywhere from those hubs. Return flights from those airports could be used to fly in additional high value emergency supplies so they could be prepositioned and ready to go to deal with the aftermath of the storm.

Those Buses probibly still run.

Jabbar Gibson(18) took one from that lot, loaded it up with people(70) and drove all the way to the astro dome.

Personally I think Bush looked Nagin straight in the eye and told him to get his own "but" in gear.

only then did Nagin finally do something.

It was stupid and wrong but he did do something finally.

The Tourists paid 25,000 for 10 buses days ago and those buses were comandeered by FEMA for evac. After notifying BBC press the tourist got the buses back and that's why they were sent to the front of the line. They PAID for these buses.

I don't know if you saw this - but this is true - These people were stuck in the French Quarters - one of the hotel owners hired the buses (charged each person $75.00+ for a seat on one of the buses, $75 x 400 = $30,000) - when they got to the French Quarters, FEMA took them over but gave the French Quarter tourist people a ride to the Super Dome or the people walked to the Super Dome - then the people moved to the Hyatt due to the violence at the Super Dome.

This is what I have heard. The people were tourists (brits - aussies - american from other states - etc) there was 400 of them. Most of them tried to fly out but the airport was shut down on Sunday and the people returned to the hotels from the airport.

We lived on Grand Cayman for several years. When a hurricane was approaching the policy was evacuate the tourists first.

Then the expats and Caymanians could leave if there was time.

I don't really see anything wrong in moving tourists out first, especially in a town that had relied on its tourists for its revenue. In fact, I'm surprised they didn't get them out of town sooner or make them evacuate before the storm.

he was a better mayor up till Katrina was heading towards NO and Bush had to request he evacuate his City. The DA, Eddie Jordan has failed the City too. Crime had been steadily going up since he took office. Murders to be exact. I just hope NO gets a mayor, no matter what party, color, creed, etc., that they put the best interest of the City and its citizens before their own. I would like to know what Nagin was doing on Friday and Saturday as Katrina was heading his way. I hope it was setting up evacuation plans.
