President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

One sixth* of the 1.4 million did NOT own a car. That means 230,000 needed "public transportation".

That sounds about right. I imagine some of them managed to get out. In fact, most of the ones still in the city are those who did not own cars and could not get out. Even the stubborn ones who owned cars and stayed anyway, I'm sure, got out when the pumps failed and the lake poured in. It's really frustrating to hear people insinuate that these people deserve what is happening because they did not evacuate.

Getting one camera crew into an area is much simpler than getting large-scale rescue equipment and personnel in.

One thing being completely ignored during all the blathering is that the most dire needs and areas are OFF-CAMERA.

Should relief efforts be concentrated where the camera are just for PR value? Of course not. Has it occurred to you that the location where Geraldo is yelling, although in dire straits, may actually be in better shape than other places in the city?

Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it isn't happening.

Thanks. That's interesting. It's a good compromise, I guess, given that it'd be unseemly to go on the air tomorrow night asking for MDA donations. Is the lack of a BoD a good thing or a bad thing?

where were you that this happened? even "Bush country" has alot of Dems in it. sure, people may have been "listeneing", but thinking "what a jerk this woman is".

you should have taken your money back. I was going to give to charity, until the left took this thing went political. now, I will only give to an agency that focuses on MS and AL.

Mike - thanks so much for sharing this wonderful news this morning! Another ray of sunshine peeks through the clouds. Prayers for the safety of your wife's family members still missing, and for stamina through your wife's long hours and big responsibilities.

If he's committing such a fraud, he'll be exposed.

The truth is what always matters to me.

The CC was not an official evacuation point, so that is apparently the reason no one knew they were there for days.

-------

Completely untrue.

Press reports show that police were directing refugees to the Convention Center because the Superdome was full.

I personally heard NG and police discussing if any food or water was brought to the convention center two days ago.

Agreed...the enormity of this tragedy far exceeded any preparations to deal with it that were in place....those who think otherwise are just fooling themselves

he needs to talk more about the security problem there ...

I think the talk was perfect. He said that the active duty search and rescue people will not tolerate thugs preying on innocents. That says all that needs to be said. The rest will be action.

Is the lack of a BoD a good thing or a bad thing?

It's one less layer of bureaucracy to pay, have meetings with, and answer to. Makes his operation much more efficient.

we are starting to hear criticism of the mayor and governor - our counter-attack is just atarting. the Dems have gone out on a limb, calling Bush a racist - let's see if they can sustain that charge amongst the public at large.

As I mentioned yesterday...there were friends of my step daughter who chose to ignor the warnings stay and have "hurrican parties". They were called "party poopers" for leaving early Saturday.

If all of what you say is true, the Nagin and Blanco should have admitted that days ago. Instead they tried to keep control.

Frankly I think the reporting has been VERY one sided. They keep showing the tragedy - but they're not showing enough of the good

Reality hurts sometimes, I've seen both things covered.

The tragedy is overwhelming, the rescue and recovery has a long way to go.

The media is coordinating with the left to blame this on the President, because they know if they can't it will be blamed on a corrupt city Democratic establishment.

This can not happen, so Bush must be blamed.
