COLUMBUS, Ohio - Investigators are trying to determine whether skeletal remains discovered Thursday in a field near a reservoir are that of a woman who has been missing for three weeks, police said.
The Franklin County coroner and an anthropologist were dispatched to the scene, said Sgt. Brent Mull, a Columbus police spokesman.
It was expected to take several days for investigators to identify the victim, including gender, Mull said. Clothes on the remains were badly decomposed, he said.
Police have been investigating the disappearance of Julie Popovich, 20, of suburban Reynoldsburg, who was last seen Aug. 11 at a bar near the Ohio State University campus.
"We obviously would love to give closure to the Julie Popovich case, Mull said. "But we don't want to get ahead of ourselves here."
Landscape workers found the remains near Hoover Reservoir around 2 p.m. and about two miles from where an ID belonging to Popovich was found earlier, Mull said
Prayers for this woman and her family, whoever she is.
